Over 1700 Killed in February Iraq Bloodshed

More than 1,705 people were killed across Iraq during February, according to figures compiled by Antiwar.com. This number is up considerably from last month owing to a large number of militant casualties, particularly in Anbar and the northern provinces.

IBO: 162,000 Reported Deaths in Iraq War

Iraq Body Count, a British non-governmental agency that tracks only confirmed deaths, released its estimate of war fatalities. They calculated that about 162,000 people died from violence that took place since the beginning of the war in 2003 until its formal end last month. At least 114,000 of those were civilians.

Turkish Tanks Move Deep into Iraq, Maybe

Turkish forces again crossed the border into northern Iraq in what is being described as the busiest border activity since Kurdish rebels killed 24 Turkish soldiers last week. No reports of casualties have as yet surfaced, but clashes may be underway.

Turkey Sends Commandos Into Iraq After Kurdish Rebels Kill 26 Turkish Soldiers

Suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (P.K.K.) rebels ambushed two military posts in southeastern Turkey today, killing at 26 Turkish soldiers and wounding 18 more. Backed by helicopter gunships, about 600 Turkish commandos then entered several miles into Iraq in response to the attacks. The number of dead rebels is as yet unknown, but it is at least 15 killed, according to reports. Turkey also hinted that outside forces might be supporting the rebels.

Iraq Kurds Demand Right to Raise Kurdish Flags in Contested Area

Thousands of Kurdish Iraqis gathered in Khanaqin today to demand the right to fly the Kurdish flag in their city. Earlier this week, they learned of a central government order to remove the flags, which fly everywhere, even at local government buildings. As many as 20,000 protestors were reported at today’s gathering. At least one man was injured during the demonstrations after he set himself on fire.

String of Bomb and Gun Attacks in Baghdad Kill 30

Baghdad suffered a string of bomb and small arms attacks today, killing at least 30 people and wounding 88 others, not including the bombers. Many of the victims were police personnel, who were the targets of the two most significant attacks. The violence also appeared focused on Shi’ite neighborhoods. There were no immediate claims of responsibility, but two months ago al-Qaeda in Iraq, which is predominantly Sunni, vowed to carry out a spree that would total 100 attacks.

US Offers $10 Million Bounty For al-Qaeda in Iraq Leader

The U.S. State Department is offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the location of the senior leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq (A.Q.I.). As well as offering the bounty, the U.S. State Department also designated Abu Du’a as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist.” The designation prohibits supporting Abu Du’a and freezes any assets he may have in the United States or comes under the control of U.S. persons.

Uniformed Gunmen Stage Massacre at Iraqi Government Complex

As many as 20 people were killed when uniformed gunmen stormed a government complex in al-Baghdadi, which is 90 miles northwest of the capital, in Anbar province. Two suicide bombers triggered the attack at about 9:00 a.m., when they detonated their explosives. Other gunmen then followed and seized the complex until soldiers were able to retake it three hours later. Both civilians and police personnel were trapped during the occupation.
