Speaking to reporters Tuesday, President Trump ssaid that preparations continue for the summit with Kim Jong-un, but that there is a “very substantial chance” the talks will be postponed from June 12. Trump suggested Chinese President Xi Jinping was to blame.
Trump said there was a “little change in attitude from Kim” after his second meeting with Xi. He offered no suggestion as to why China would want the talks delayed, and said it was possible the talks would just happen later.
This may be the administration trying to connect two unrelated events. Kim met with Xi in China on May 8, and North Korea made no public comments suggesting a change for nearly a week. Then, it came after US-South Korean war games, and North Korea was very clear it was the war games they were upset about.
Subsequent North Korean anger about John Bolton’s talk of the “Libyan Model” of denuclearization has left the Trump Administration baffled, despite South Korean officials trying to explain it very carefully. Neither of these things has anything to do with China, and with China openly supporting the peace talks, there’s little reason to think they’re secretly sabotaging them.
Kim is trying to drive a wedge between Trump and Xi.
He doesn’t want Trump and Xi to gang up against him in nuclear talks.
Trump, the greatest salesman in the world (he proved it, didn’t he?), learned much from his years of honing his sales skills. Why use logic, reason, and good sense? Much easier to keep everyone off balance and hide your incompetence. Just baffle them with bullshit, take the money, and run. Works for him.
I wonder what Trump and Kim Jong-un would talk about and for what to ask one another?
I expect that first-off, Trump would demand; oops, ask Kim to let Americans come to the north Korea to destroy or remove all his NW [nuclear weapons] and all of N.K’s missiles.
And Trump would then do a lot of ‘promising’.
Helmut Kohl, German Chancellor and Secretary of State James Baker promised Gorbachev that NATO would not be expanded eastward “not even one inch” beyond a reunited Germany if he “tore down that Wall”.
When the talks fail (as they must due to unreasonable US demands),
the US will attempt to divert attention away from the real issues, and instead blame the failure of “negotiations” on alleged “malicious” Chinese influence.
The always blaming others is pathetic. Two major reasons why Kim is weary are the “Libya” threats by Bolton and Trump and Trump pulling out of the Iran agreement.
China will agree with Kim and Trump if Trump agrees with him a little more forcefully on Taiwan.
