Israeli Drone Strike Killed Four in Lebanon, Including School Principal

IDF terms slain women as ‘suspects’ who posed a threat to troops

Israeli drone strikes targeted a carload of civilian in the Lebanese town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa, killing the four people within. The IDF confirmed the attack, terming them “suspects” who were killed because they posed a threat to ground troops.

The slain were identified as the female principal of the Youssef Chamoun Public School, her mother, a domestic worker in their employ, and a Syrian refugee that has yet to be named.

That the IDF was quick to label the slain suspects is typical of Israeli airstrikes in the ongoing Lebanon war, and that the people ultimately turned out to be civilians was similarly not unusual, though that they were identified so quickly and included multiple women is likely to make this particularly embarrassing for the occupying forces.

This is the largest single Israeli attack in several days, and may suggest that the relative lull in the death toll in the immediate days following the most recent ceasefire is coming to an end. Other drone grenade attacks were also reported in Nabatieh al-Fawqa, while Israeli troops were reported to be demolishing homes across the south. The death toll from Lebanon’s Health Ministry increased to 4,319 killed and 12,203 wounded.

The “ceasefire” never actually required Israel to cease firing at all, but it did suggest a plan for Israel to withdraw from a pair of small “pilot zones” within Lebanon. Israel ultimately backed out of that plan, however, postponing it indefinitely.

Israeli officials have also now reportedly submitted a list of Lebanese soldiers they suspect of secretly sharing information with Hezbollah, and are demanding that the military exclude them from any coordination. It is unclear if this is directly related to Israeli claims Lebanon was in the process of “sidelining” Shi’ite members of their army.
