Overseeing the last 3 1/2years of hostility toward Iran, US special envoy Brian Hook has resigned. There is no official reason for his resignation, but some reports pointed to next week’s push at the UN on an arms embargo, which is expected to fail. Hook is being replaced by Elliott Abrams.
Abrams, of Iran-Contra fame, is currently the special envoy for Venezuela regime change, and while that regime change hasn’t happened, he’s going to retain that post on top of the Iran post.
Hook presented his time as a success, saying that even though the US didn’t get any Iran negotiations on his watch, they at least damaged Iran’s economy with constant sanctions, saying he left Iran weaker than he found it. Hook’s consistent bellicosity toward Iran is likely to be stepped up by his successor.
If Venezuela is any gauge, Abrams will continue the “maximum pressure” campaign while at the same time trying to orchestrate some sort of regime change. Officially, the administration says regime change is not their goal in Iran.
Venezuela is a messy situation and Washington has been losing relevance as Iran, China and Russia along with some 20 other countries step up to support the Venezuelan people. Iran as well has be making progress a recent defense pact with China is a good example of how Washington’s MAX Pressure campaigns are misguided.
How can he find time? This is nothing to a super-duper uber-man!

Is Trump even in control of our foreign policy at all? The last few presidents have gone into office promising to roll back our foreign policy, but achieved nothing. Does this tell you something?

There is a ton of money being made by defense contractors, so they can turn right around and bribe, I mean, donate to the election campaigns of favorable politicians, using the same money that we taxpayers gave them to produce those weapons. This is America, *nothing* stands in the way of a well-connected person making $$$. How is a president supposed to sway the minds of a group of lawmakers who are in the pockets of defense contractors? How do we solve this? 1) Take private money out of elections – it’s basically legalized bribery at this point. 2) Forbid retired military personnel from lobbying US officials on behalf of anything defense-related, keep them from cozying up to their old buddies in the Pentagon’s procurement office. 3) [extreme] Nationalize the defense industry – should anyone be getting filthy rich off American agression? Morally, no. Asking privately owned American companies to stop trying to make more money for themselves is anathema to every capitalist ideal.
Hey, remember that he pardoned one, interfering in internal Navy business by demanding he be reinstated as a SEAL after grossly conducting himself irresponsibly, and then brought him along to some of his rallies. America!

The US really doesn’t care how many people suffer and die because of their sanctions. They have the mistaken idea that sanctions will cause people to rise up against their leadership and install a government more friendly to the US. They’ve been doing this to Cuba for almost 60 years and it hasn’t worked yet. All it does is make people hate the US more. Even those of us in other countries who used to feel friendly towards the US don’t feel that way anymore because of their rampant cruelty around the world.
I think they pretty much know that sanctions don’t work. That’s obvious. Like you said, they just don’t care.
