With the Syrian government saying that any more failures to take back the country’s southwest diplomatically would lead them to launch an offensive, the US State Department is threatening “firm and appropriate measures” to punish Syria for any such attempt.
Syria has been expected to launch such an offensive for awhile. Russia negotiated with Israel to get them to agree to keep out of the fighting, in return for Russia urging Iran and Hezbollah to remain out of the border region. The assumption has been for some time this cleared room for the push.
US officials, however, say that Syria would be violating the previous de-escalation deal made between the US, Russia, and Turkey, as some of the offensive would take place in that area. Other de-escalation zones have effectively been erased by government gains, or the wiping out of certain rebels by others.
The southwest zone protects some rebel factions along the border with Jordan, though some of the rebels in the area are also tied to al-Qaeda. Syria has isolated the rebels into only a handful of areas, and the southwest is likely a priority because of the region’s proximity to the western oil and gas sites.
The oil and gas sites are a priority for the US also I’m sure, in order to make the regime they are trying to install in at least part of Syria at all viable.
Source article is the Jerusalem Post. Consider the source. No precise identification of the source within the State Dept. Hidden Neocon Israeli agent perhaps? Remember the 51 State Dept personnel who signed the anti-Trump letter? Remember the State Dept personnel that Obama transferred to civil service so they couldn’t be fired by Trump?
Israel wants to keep contiguous-to-Israel Southwest Syria out of Syrian government control. Here they attempt it with threats channeled through the Neocon-subverted US State Dept. Will it work? Will the US join Israel in attacking the Syrian military when they initiate the military offensive to recover control of Syrian territory? We shall see.
“Remember the State Dept personnel that Obama transferred to civil service so they couldn’t be fired by Trump?”
Dubya had done the same thing to Obama, along with some last minute hires left as stay-behind agents. I don’t know if the Clinton Admin had done it, because when Dubya did it the objections were that it was unprecedented, but the objectors were also known liars.
This is worse than “both sides do it.” It is the full flowering of the Deep State. It is true even if Trump says it. It was true when Hillary said it of Bill’s Admin too. Maybe they both deserved the opposition, but that method of opposition is illegitimate.
Were the de-escalation zones agreed by Syria?
No?
Then get the heck out of there..
The good old rule — lead, follow or get out of the way applies here. US has been in the way for a long time. Protecting violent, Islamic mercenaries for a long time there. Jordan is already paying the price. But this is just the beginning. Can Israel and US protect Jordan from chaos, and becoming de facto a Palestinian state? Syria would have no problem getting rid of the destabilizing effect of these groups. But US and Israel see it differently. They want short term power posture no matter the cost. So, it feels good to threaten. But Jordan financed by US leftover flunkies in the Midfle East will not last long. Just because the danger of averting price hikes has been put off — it has not been eliminated.
once again us interference in other countries business – this time protecting terrorist ISIS is pitiful.
“China/Russia/(fill in the blank), threatens measures against US for (US)offensive in Southwest(US)”. This too was in a de-escalation area that was agreed upon by everyone except the US.
No problem, right?
The US needs to understand they have to win a war before they own a country. Fortunately for the world the US is no good at winning war. Unfortunately for us. however, that limitation hasn’t stopped them yet (‘cept maybe against Russia).
