Having taken Slovyansk earlier this week, Ukrainian officials are increasingly bellicose about their ongoing civil war, demand unconditional, unilateral disarmament by the rebels before any future discussions.
“There will be no more unilateral ceasefires” by Ukrainian troops, announced Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey, while other officials promised a “nasty surprise” for any of the eastern rebels that continue to resist their takeover.
Since the takeover of Slovyansk, most of the rebels in Donetsk Oblast have moved into the city of Donetsk itself, and have been barricading themselves in pending a Ukrainian military invasion.
Defending the city is likely to be difficult, as the Ukrainian military is increasingly using not only airstrikes, but armored vehicles in its offensives. Donetsk and Luhansk remain the two major strongholds of the ethnic Russian rebels, who seek increased autonomy.
Prior to this conflict, one of the main objections that Ukrainians had against living in a same country with the Russians and especially being ruled by the Russians was based on the assertion that Russians have genocidal tendencies against the Ukrainians.
This claim by the Ukrainians was based on the events surrounding the Ukrainian famine of the 1930s. The Ukrainian famine proves no such tendencies on the part of the Russians. If anything, the Ukrainian famine proved that Stalin was an equal opportunity tyrant – mistreating Russians and non-Russians alike.
The current conflict in Ukraine provides the Russians with material for a much stronger case that Ukrainians have genocidal tendencies against the Russians. If Ukrainians found objectionable living in a same country and especially being ruled by the Russians, than after this conflict, the same can be said about the Russians living in Ukraine under Ukrainian rule.

The rebellion is obviously petering out. An insurgency cannot survive without a foreign backer and a fallback base in a neighbouring country. If Putin has sealed off the Russian frontier, and talk of Spetznaz forces in the area, as distinct from the rickety army or the rickety frontier police, suggests that he has, then the rebels are slowly running out of arms, munitions, fuel, money and even food and water, which they will sooner or later have to start requisitioning from the population (and won't that make them popular!). We are always told the rebels want "increased autonomy", but nobody ever tells us what that consists of or even what it is they dislike about the provinces' present level of autonomy. Even my friend in Kharkov doesn't know what that means, which suggests it may just be part of the neocon propaganda scam.
That's right the extremist playbook of negotiation tactics! Must be the same Neocon advisors as have been advising the US in relation to Iran's Nuclear power activities!
