Officials have confirmed that Saudi Arabia intends to provide Chinese-made anti-aircraft missiles to rebel factions in Syria soon in a move to “tip the balance” against a Syrian military which has enjoyed air superiority.
Shoulder-mounted “manpad” missiles have been smuggled into Syria after the looting in Libya, but never in huge quantities. Rebel factions, including those supported by the West, have repeatedly said that if they were able they would use such missiles to attack civilian airliners flying over Syrian airspace, saying all civilian aircraft are “legitimate targets” in their war.
It is those threats which have made the US oppose such arms shipments in the past, and while they say their position “has not changed” they don’t appear to be seriously opposing Saudi shipments, and indeed plan to bankroll the same rebels with millions of dollars in new aid.
Though Saudi Arabia has bought large amounts of US arms, the decision to use Chinese weapons for the rebel shipments is no doubt an attempt to retain plausible deniability for the US when the inevitable happens and the “moderate” rebels start shooting down passenger jets across the region.
The US (CIA) is helping the Saudi arms flow to the fundamentalists.
And where are all the insults from the US about Saudi gay rights? They execute people there for homosexuality. I thought the us was all about gay rights, now. Russia doesn’t even imprison them, let alone execute them.
Might the Chinese object when the missiles supplied to SA are used to shoot down aircraft carrying civilians?
nah…the check cleared.
The story goes like this: “rebel” as they are called, and the “French fighters” as they are called, losing the war, USG is negotiating with Iran and EU (French) making sure that a bigger piece of the Iranian cake is for US corporation in cooperation with French companies in central Africa and more likely down the road with the Iranian investment.
Saudis meanwhile don’t like Iranian, nor they liked Libyan leader nor they like Bashir Al-Assad and they don’t know what to do with Iraqi government, in Iraq however one thing is for sure, the Mehdi army thus far is silence, not seeking another religious regional scale Sunni-Shiite war, so, Saudis bargain chip is Syria and for USG and the EU keeping the Saudis happy they go along with Saudis-Israelis policy that Syrian war must not end. From here, the “French-English fighters” are flown by British-French-German-Turkish Airline to Istanbul or Amman-jordan and direct or not, guided by the Turkish-Jordanian government into Syria, so it is not surprising when Saudis gives the “rebels” or even don’t mind to give the “French or English fighters” or for that matter the Taliban anti-aircraft missiles for Afghanistan and Syrian war to continue. Few weeks ago we said: there is either for this (Syrian) war to end or is going to be longer then any war where once again the USG and EU corporate governments are orchestrating the war.

TERRORISTS…. TERRORISTS……. Not rebels! These are paid mercenaries by the US, Israel and the Gulf States. How the hell do you continue to refer to them as "Rebels". They are NOT even Syrians. What exactly are they rebelling against in Syria and why is it any of their business being there in the first place?
Yes I know that my comments are to be viewed by the commissars at Antiwar. com before my thoughts can be published and possibly damage the sensitivities of their readers who are only allowed to view thoughts that Antiwar.com approves of.
Some of them almost certainly paid mercenaries.
Some of them are almost certainly foreign, mostly Arab, fighters motivated by Islamism.
Some of them are almost certainly Syrians.
The first category might be rightly denounced as not being "rebels" but rather foreign invaders.
The third category certainly are "rebels," by any reasonable definition.
The second category is debatable, but on the Syrian regime's own pan-Arab terms, it would be hypocritical to regard them as anything but rebels.
Oh, wait, I'm replying to a comment that isn't here, because Antiwar.com only allows its readers to view thoughts we approve of.
Or maybe you're just too lazy to register an IntenseDebate or WordPress.com account and can't get it through your head that I'm not your instant-service comment concierge.
That's two possibilities. Three guesses which one is correct.
Your sarcasm is sophomoric and your 3 categories of so called "fighters" in Syria is equally convoluted, imprecise and self-serving. The overwhelming "rebels" in Syria are foreign fighters paid for by the west and the quizzing Arab Gulf States. By any definition you care to use, they are TERRORISTS. But then again, those that the west supports are "rebels" right? Only those, such as the Palestinians who are fighting against a murderous occupation of their land by total interlopers to that land, are deemed "terrorists". The same applies to HizbAllah who were formed to fight against the18 year occupation of their land in Lebanon. You turn the world upside down with your speciousness and your laziness to familiar with the facts before you go on to spout off your convoluted logic.
"By any definition you care to use, they are TERRORISTS."
My definition of terrorism is simple: People who attack civilians and non-combatants for the purpose of inciting terror to achieve their political goals.
I'm fairly certain that a good number of the rebels in Syria are terrorists under that definition. So are each and every one of the involved states, including but not limited to the Obama and Assad regimes.
Nice try but no cigar in trying to put over the whopper that I automagically designate Palestinian Arabs and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, but not Israelis, as terrorist. Did you just make that up hoping it would be true, or did you know it was a flat lie before you typed it? Hint: One of us had an article published on Hezbollah's web site this week. And it wasn't you.
Link to your article on Hezbollah website? Very interested.

Cool! Thanks.
The blood IS UP TO AMERIKA'S NECK. What is wrong with the 'murikan (Bush speak)..CON..gress? Do we even need a CON..gress?
When they start shooting down passenger jets, the main stream media will definitely blame Assad as the culprit.
no, the MSM (and the Congress) will blame Obama for not supporting the "rebels" McCrazy and Grahamcrackers wanted to support because they were the "good rebels" not the "bad rebels" we're talking about now.
This is not Saudi Arabia that gives anti-aircraft missiles to terrorists, rather the baby killer OBAMA is giving the terrorists ARMS to overthrow a legitimate government to protect a police state of Obama regime, war criminal. Saudi Arabia pays the bill and carry out the terrorist activities to kill large number of civilian every single day in Iraq, Pakistan, Syria and elsewhere ON BEHALF OF THE US A POLIC STATE and its zionist stooges posing as 'leaders'. No world government is allowed. United, United against the evil.
see film House of Saud
and for Arab speaking people see on youtube the fight of Jamal Abdel Naser with the Saudis in the 1950 and beyond..
If the missiles had not been given by them, others would have done unfortunately.
Jason,
You start this article with…Officials have confirmed that….. Could you please quote your source for this information.
I'm not doubting your integrity but I need to be sure before I start quoting this article lest some one proves me wrong.
Knapp, they are terrorists, knapp you are knäpp. Knapp and antiwar.com you are supporting the terrorism created by USG in the past and present, you are titling these people as if they were rebelling against Saudis kingdom or for that matter the English monarchism. Your supportive idea is Trotskyist which means you are for wars by not recognizing who is who and who is wrong or who is right, you simply supporting tyrants regimes in Middle East.
[Note from Knapp: Haven’t I cautioned before that it’s just plain not nice to lie about Antiwar.com? Neither Antiwar.com, nor I, nor so far as I know anyone affiliated with Antiwar.com supports US interventionism — direct military or by proxy — anywhere, for any reason. I am also unaware of any regime, anywhere, which is supported by Antiwar.com – TLK]
“Okay people”…(I sound like my 9th grade History teacher)…
I linked over here from Commondreams.org and after spending many days reading the LA Times, The New York Times, articles related to Syria at InformationClearinghouse and the relatively naive “HuffPo” I need to chime in here…
The picture I see emerging is one of absolute global hegemony by the United States and Israel. Israel is a major “undeclared”?? nuclear weapons power with its ultimate goal being “Greater Israel”.
Now stay with me here…Did anyone see Gen. Wesley Clark’s interview on YouTube regarding “the seven nation wars in five years in the Middle East”?
ALL the countries correlate with “The Greater Israel” project, including Syria and Iran.
We know that Obama had to get a special agreement to go outside the laws against arming terrorists in order to have Congress “SECRETLY” finance some of these extremist “rebels” including the Takfirists who publicly strangled a 12 year old girl in Syria a few days ago and posted it to YouTube. This is Senator John McCain’s favorite terrorist element of the “rebels” the U.S. is financing.
Pressure must be brought to every media organization in the United States to find out the truth and ALL the truth about United States and Israeli involvement in Syria whether clandestine or open.
Seriously people. We need to cut out the bullshit and get down to the whole, rotten, ugly truth.
I am afraid the “rebels” whether ours, Israel’s, Saudi Arabia’s or another country’s, are most likely “terrorists”.
