The Pentagon announced that it is setting up a new command, based in Germany, to oversee the training and equipping of Ukraine’s military during its fight with Russia, the New York Times reported on Friday. The command is named Security Assistance Group-Ukraine, or SAG-U.
The news came soon after the announcement of another $400 million arms package to Ukraine, including tanks and drones. These weapons will be used to retake territory Russia has annexed, according to Kiev. Current and former US officials told the Times these moves suggest that Washington "expects the threat from Russia to Ukraine and its neighbors to persist for many years."
Sabrina Singh, the deputy Pentagon press secretary, told reporters the new command will "ensure we are postured to continue supporting Ukraine over the long term." She added the US remains "committed to Ukraine for as long as it takes."
Discussions about a formal command to oversee operations in Ukraine began earlier this year. SAG-U will be led by a "high-ranking" general with a roughly 300-person staff.
A possible reason for this decision may be to obscure the level of funding going to the proxy war, making it more difficult for Americans and journalists to discern where the money comes from and just how much is being spent.
As Kelley Vlahos, Editorial Director at Responsible Statecraft, has written,
[Dan Caldwell, senior advisor to Concerned Veterans of America] suggests this could allow the Pentagon to carve out a protected fund for the war. "Establishing a formal, named-mission or military task-force specifically for Ukraine could further open the door to moving funding for the war in Ukraine to the Overseas Contingency Operations budget, which is essentially the Pentagon’s slush fund. That could be one of the primary motivations here – the Pentagon wants a steady stream of funding from a source that Congress has shown a lack of willingness to properly oversee."
Officially, since the war began, the Pentagon has authorized nearly $19 billion in direct military aid for Ukraine, though data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy suggests the real figure is closer to $28 billion. In pursuit of Russia’s “strategic defeat,” Washington has pledged over $67 billion in support for Kiev altogether, primarily in weapons – a figure greater than Moscow’s entire 2021 military budget.
Members of both parties in Congress are reportedly planning another massive aid package for Ukraine that is said to cost at least $50 billion, which would bring total spending on the war to more than $115 billion. Though President Joe Biden has acknowledged the world is closer to nuclear "Armageddon" than any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis, Washington has refused to engage in diplomacy with Russia. US officials have declared that they "ruled out the idea of pushing or even nudging Ukraine to the negotiating table," while the Pentagon has vowed to exploit the war to "weaken" Russia. Last month, for the first time, the Pentagon revealed that there is a small US troop presence in Ukraine.

Another forever war, Pentagon product. Heaven help us.
This war can’t last too long; two years maximum.
If that happens it will be open season on all living politicians!
If they’re smart about it, it will be televised, with no commercial breaks!
I am wondering about that, It is STILL not clear which way Europe will turn by the first annversary of Russian intervention.
As it looks today, popular support in Europe for war is ralidly waning. Some countries like Hungary. Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Serbia have massive public rejection of hpung Ukrraine. And many very vocal about approving Russian intervention as justified.
Support in Getmany is regional. Western region, predominantly Catholic are more supportive of Ukraine — by which they really mean support for West Ukrainian Catholic minority currently in power in Kiev. Eastern, predominantly Protestant Germany is mire skeptical of Ukrainian story, and majority are not for military support. They are more likely to see Rusdian side if the cinflict.
Destruction of pipelines has a sobering effect — which has not been seen yet in public reaction. But it has a smell of anti-German Anglosaxon masterstroke. We are yet to see fallout.
Perhaps it is Scholtz’s trip to China. Standing nex to Chinese Prime Minister Scholz boldly supported One China policy and recommends peaceful resolution. Just actually repeating China official position.
Why the trip? Economy in his mind — but possibly a way to explore way out of the mess.
Europe has to realize that Russian missiles will take just minutes to their objectives. The U.S. is quite a ways away, except for the West coast.
Russia is going to employ 4 new submarines armed with Poseidon torpedoes 100 megatons each (the bomb dropped on Hiroshima was 15 kilotons; more than 6 000 times weaker). Launched from the submarine, Poseidon will arrive very quick near the coast both from the west and from the east. They calculated; 500-meter-high radioactive tsunami will cove New York after the explosion of one such torpedo. Russia plan to employ 30 of them in a near future.
This winter is going to be hard for EU and the next one even worse. Then, eventually, the political changes could start.
Putin takes his time. Half million Russian military force which will be ready for an offensive in Ukraine in a couple of weeks, is not enough for taking under control all Ukraine, and there is no sign US can be ready for the negotiation; so, the war will carry on for a while. A couple of months before the next presidential elections in US, when American public will be less enthusiastic about the war in Ukraine, it can be a good idea to use the peace negotiations for PR even if Russian army don’t move too deep into Ukraine.
They are planting nukes across the globe looking to make this a true world war. F-cking lunatics.
Well said ED.
Heaven does not care.
The current Kiev regime can’t survive without a substantial financial support from abroad. Who else can pay for it if not Americans? UK is not rich enough. The others need it not.
Criminals in America supporting criminals in Ukraine.
Please Russia free the world!
How can any sentient being call this USA behavior “defense”???? what are the threats from Russia???Even during the Cold war most of the “threats” were not genuine (who remembers the McCarthy madness, and the kids under their desks?) but at least the “commie menace” was an excuse. Now it is all due to the interference, at least from the Obama days, in a “nation” known for its corruption, Nazi influence, debts and Burisma. Biden Nuland etc stepped in, NATO pushed, just to punish Russia for being next door and asking for security guarantees! GO HOME YANKS and fix your huge problems. This devastation is not just of your pretended friend Ukraine, but of your “allies” the EU.
Was it called defense – I could not see that term used in the article, as for ‘what are the threats from Russia’ yhe article is quite clear i.e. that the threat is to Ukraine and Russia’s other neighbors:
And it would seem that this threat is fairly well documented.
Ignore “Washington rules” lies please. Ukraine has refused all peaceful attempts for 8 years and preached hatred of Russia to its children in special camps, has been ruled by the USA/ CIA (check Hunter Biden as well as Nuland, Blinken Biden, Obama….) and has abolished all opposition parties and TV stations. Russia does not want an enemy and has tried to get Ukrainian guarantees for Russian speakers in Ukraine, to no avail. Russia is NOT a threat to others. Try observation, not fantasy.
The ‘lies’ that most of the world actually believes?
Just assertions – or do you have actual links to reputable sites that proves this – the Nuland story has been debunked repeatedly – so this looks like conspiracy theories at the very least partially.
No it has banned parties that advocated aligning with the Russians much as the UK put fascists in camps during WWII (and had press control).
Russia is a threat to others the Finns and Swedes saw this as has the Georgians before them – I can link the kind of rhetoric in Russian state TV that makes a lot of countries believe that Russia is an actual threat – and hearing Putin comparing what he did tp what Peter the great did and talking about reestablishing the Russian empire does not make people less afraid.
“The ‘lies’ most of the world actually believes”?
Sorry, but North Amerikkka, Europe and Australia do not equal “most of the world”. You may be forgetting South America, the Middle East, Africa, China, India…
Only 4 countries supported Russia in i.e. voted against condemning their annexation of the occupied parts of Ukraine – so yes the majority of the world.
35 chose to abstain – there are 193 countries in UN so yes most of the world not only the West rejects the Russian stance and hence believes in what you call a lie – a small minority are not sure which ‘lie’ to support and a very small minority believe in Putin’s lie.
People who are relatively powerless invoke abstention all the time. It beats pissing off people who are powerful.
That could explain it only why did the did China and India not dare to vote against when Iran, North Korea, Syria and Nicaragua dared to do so – why did Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan and Turkmenistan all in the CSTO not vote against they have little chance of facing much in the shape of consequences according to people here?
Just tell me why would these nations not support their friend Russia?
(OB, we have to stop meeting like this…)
Most of the world doesn’t believe western propaganda. Iraq issue saw to that.
I hope most people have doubts about propaganda. I certainly do.
Repetition of a lie doesn’t constitute documentation.
I mad no repetition of any lies all I did was to point out what the article actually said. If you can point to any assertion that I made feel free – because I cannot spot one, so I have nothing to document.
Many people are benefitting from the huge American military budget. First of all, the military industry oligarchs and promoted by them politicians. 60 years ago, President Eisenhower, before he left White House, talked about the danger of the military industrial complex taking under control American politics. The obvious solution of this problem is the nationalization of the military industry. Because the military industry is mixed with the civil industry, the nationalization of all big business and also of the major banks, is necessary. It is necessary and yet it is unachievable because it means the sharp turn to the socialist political system. US are not ready for this. Thats why, the warmongering will carry on because the rulers of US need it for supporting the exaggerated military budget.
But the people in this “democracy” of course only “benefit” if their town or city has “defense contracts” or they get a job in the voluntary military forces and can die for their kind nation..
For as long as it takes or till the Ukraine runs out of Infantry which will be a win for Russia .
Denying and ignoring the myriad problems in your OWN country in order to send billions upon billions to a nation that is largely inconsequential is nothing short of criminal.
So True!! Purge the DC Ghouls!
“Sabrina Singh, the deputy Pentagon press secretary, told reporters the new command will “ensure we are postured to continue supporting Ukraine over the long term.” She added the US remains “committed to Ukraine for as long as it takes.””
“As long as it takes” … to do what exactly? To go back all the way to pre-2014 control lines? That may be a very long time indeed.
So, under the US constitution, is the Pentagon authorized to make such long term commitments on behalf of this great democratic nation?
“Postured”?
Discussions about a formal command to oversee operations in Ukraine began earlier this year. SAG-U will be led by a “high-ranking” general with a roughly 300-person staff.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Assistance_Command,_Vietnam
As the U.S. military presence in South Vietnam grew, MACV quickly outgrew the Pasteur Street quarters and expanded into a proliferating number of buildings throughout downtown Saigon, adding to the command’s existing security vulnerabilities and communications difficulties. In March 1965 Westmoreland began a search for a new location large enough to accommodate the entire headquarters. He initially tried to obtain a site between the ARVN Joint General Staff compound and Tan Son Nhut Airport, desirable from the standpoint of removing Americans from central Saigon and placing MACV conveniently close to its Vietnamese counterpart. The Vietnamese government, however, refused to turn over the most suitable location, a soccer field…near the civilian air terminal, allegedly because Premier Nguyễn Cao Kỳ wanted to keep the property for a postwar tourist hotel. In late April 1966, with the Saigon regime locked in a tense confrontation with Buddhist and ARVN rebels in I Corps, Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. and Westmoreland reopened the effort to acquire the Tan Son Nhut soccer field. Under their combined pressure, Kỳ gave way. On 2 July 1966 construction of a new purpose-built facility was commenced. The building was designed and constructed under the supervision of the U.S. Navy Officer in Charge of Construction RVN. The construction contractor was RMK-BRJ at a cost of $25 million. MACV occupied its new headquarters early in August 1967. The new complex soon earned the nickname “Pentagon East.” The air-conditioned structure of two-story prefabricated buildings, a little more than a third the size of its Washington namesake, included some twelve acres of enclosed office space. In addition to the headquarters offices, the complex included a barracks, a mess hall, a refrigerated storage building and its own power plant and telephone exchange. Inside, according to one staff officer, “the well-waxed corridors had the fluorescent feel of an airport terminal.” A cyclone fence, topped with barbed wire and with watch towers at intervals, provided close-in protection.
Lots of gravy on that train! No reason why it should go express to Kiev, without making some stops! The military likes to make a permanent institution out of what begins as an ad hoc policy, whenever it can. Another big, fat, bloated, bureaucratic “command,” to be added to God only knows how many “commands” the Pentagon already has, with another nice, big, fat staff, dedicated funding, perks, real estate, and so on, is the ultimate goal. Why should all of those billions of dollars go straight to our BS “allies,” when much of it can be diverted to a “high ranking” general, his “assistants,” his “assistants’ assistants,” and so on, right down the line? All complete with its own separate “appropriation” and “authorization” in the budget which, once established, becomes sacrosanct, and of course, needs a COLA every year, just for starters!
Yes, and it sounds like NATO is being rendered “honorary”, like the US Congress (I’m sure we all feel for Jens Stoltenberg) and, as the Col. Douglas McGregor smelled out, they’re setting up for another “coalition of the willing” in order to inject US troops directly into the fight. … God help us!
I don’t feel sorry for Stoltenberg, any more than I felt sorry for the Germans at Buchenwald.
Isn’t it nice being an “old bear”, OB, you can pretty much say anything and no-one is going to mess with you…
G-d help the poor troops. They didn’t sign up for this.
Made up of some generals who have never experienced combat.
It is the job of the DoD to fight the wars our civilian leadership tells it to fight. It ought to set things up so it is prepared and able to do what it is ordered to do.
That is not the same as a decision to do it. The DoD is not supposed to be in charge, much less to fight any war it is capable of fighting. It is supposed to be able to fight near anything, but then not do so, deterrence and readiness “protecting the peace.”
This is not an absurd arrangement. It is somewhat naive to think that is how we actually run our countries or our wars. However, it is how things are supposed to be.
So of course DoD is ready. That is the barest beginning of the questions we need to face, not the ultimate answer. What would be an ultimate answer would be “we could not do it if we wanted.” But for our own good that has not often enough been the answer.
So the POTUS and DOD can now declare war??? The constitution is KAPUT?? I think millions of USA citizens have something to say about that!
The Ukraine will be destroyed and if there is a Ukraine when Russia is finished with them it will be a Landlocked Rump State and all of the Nazis will be Dead.
So advocating war crimes on a massive scale – think about it! We did not kill all of the Nazis after WWII and those were the real and actual Nazis not ‘just’ extreme nationalists. Statements like yours is exactly why the Ukrainians likely feel they have to fight even if they are losing – you give them no acceptable alternative.
Take the line on Russian state tv and you know that they regard the rest of us as Nazis too – so the logic follows that we too must support the Ukrainians even if it may seem like a lost cause and economic folly.

Screw this place. I don’t recognize this country. I feel sorry for all the other humans on Earth – that they have to live with us.
Options:
(1) Global heating makes Earth uninhabitable
(2) Global nuclear war covers Earth with ice
(3) Massive asteroid blasts enough into the atmosphere for ice age N+1
If there were a God, it would likely not try this particular experiment again. After all, why bother producing such a stupid species – again?
SSDD
God sowed many seeds. Not everyone is supposed to be successful.
OB:
We ALL have to live with each other and there are good days and bad days. The bad days make the good days more spectacular!
They should drive through Pennsylvania sometime, we could use an infrastructure rebuild.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
ONE HUNDRED FIFTEEN BILLION DOLLARS???????????????????????????
For that price we should be able to buy the country and make it another US State!

Dulce Et Decorum Est III & A Taste of Armageddon
(Or the Empire has no Clothes but a Disposition Matrix)
In due homage
to Horace, Owen & Mikhail
i humbly nod
for how sweet & glorious
it must be to kill or die
for God & country
the old dirty lie
via pompous duty
asphyxiatingly-wrapped
within ersatz honor
bubbling babbling fools
gushing drooling
patriotic polished pride
so c’mon kiddies,

who’s hungry & poor,
who wants to play
the hubris ‘anything for profit’ killing game?
As newspapers rah rah

with journalistic integrity
star spangled objectivity ha ha!
as a new battle/fear lies just around the corner
& armed forces day just weeks away hooray!
rally loyal craven citizens
to whitewash warm innocuous blood
off disgraced musket & sullied polluted flag
strike up the marching parade
manifest destiny
down main street usa
hurrah!
Awaken & open thine eyes
chauvinistic folk
come & see
xenophobic overseas deeds of nefarious brutality
You’re liable
for appalling
tax-paid supported violence
exported to hamlets & villages
in lands you couldn’t find on a map
nor correctly pronounce
Assaulting families
who’ve never
did you any harm
clans you’ve never heard of

so step on up
one & all
its your civic crime
Take a trip
to the overflowing morgues
filled with small smashed bodies

Deeply inhale
the rancid stench

Gaze into doll dead eyes
frozen forever
by shock & awe
renditioned
via your God blessed

Crumpled atop a cold gurney
a stiff finger of a tiny hand
amidst a mish-mosh of mangled flesh
bulls-eyed at you war supporters
Watch
as grief-stricken father’s
zombie-wander
in shattered silence
sifting through ragged debris
devastating destruction
searching
for lost sons
missing daughters
Discovering
ripped wet mangled body parts
strewn out as pieces of a human jig-saw puzzle
taking home
the ear, the hand, the foot
to be quietly buried
while 6000 miles away
blue-blooded heroes giggle and snicker
at a video screen
toe-tagging this crime against humanity
‘bugsplat’
Harken
to the heart-piercing shrieks
as soul-torn asunder mothers
wail like howling wild animals
as they find their loves buried
broken & bloody
in the rubble
of your glorious works
Then if you can
please explain
to the unresponsive moaning
neonatal orphan
why your armed forces

dear good christian citizens

the sick slaying of the innocent
the accumulating abominations of flag-pledged atrocities
Appraise Fallujah
surrounded & caged
as the cowering cringing unarmed civilian inhabitants
are shot, burned & barbequed
like slaughtered sitting ducks
in a ‘free-fire zone’ shooting gallery
Ponder
upon your sanctimonious attack
at a school in Bajour
where 69 children are massacred by joystick
as you deceive yourself

it did not happen
washing your hands
turning as you walk away
This is Sand Creek

the next war crime called
a ‘battle’
or a ‘humanitarian bombing’
will be patriotically anointed too
sanctioned of course
by church state and school
the old lie

Hmm.. Looks great
Another tool of German occupation.
The Russian MOD is disarming NATO, tank by tank, artillery by artillery, air defense by air defense. What they loose in the Ukraine, they loose for the final global war.
Russia is inflicting a 10:1 kill ratio. And NATO overall has the following equipment losses; 330 Aircraft, 168 helicopters, 2426 UAV’s, 384 Anti Aircraft systems, 6322 tanks inc. APC’s, 882 multiple rocket launchers, 3551 rocket launchers and 7027 military automotive equipment.
If Ukraine wants to be sovereign again then they need to oust the illegal Nazi regime in Kiev and hold democratic elections. If Ukraine wants to be sovereign again they need to stop assassinating opposition leaders, they need to re-instate 13 political parties banned and they need to release the leaders of these parties from captivity.

Just like a command center during WWII. Generals and other high ranking officers in their bunker directing the mayhem. WE ARE AT WAR WITH THE RUSSIANS!
Only Russia can stop MIC from pigging out at the Treasury trough.
Oh really, exactly how? Because so far Russia has caused the opposite.
russia could simply turn off the natural gas flow to germany and then start issuing demands
Is the new command to aid Ukraine? Or is it to make sure Germany does what it’s told to do?
