House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Monday that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine warrants the “strongest possible military response” and that the US shouldn’t be deterred by warnings from Russia.
Pelosi made the comments from Poland a day after a trip to Ukraine, where she met with Ukrainian President Voldymr Zelensky in Kyiv. The House speaker received a warm reception from Zelensky, who presented her with the Order of Princess Olga, a Ukrainian civil decoration presented to women who make contributions to the Ukrainian state.
On Monday, Pelosi held a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw to discuss the US and NATO’s increasing support for Ukraine. Poland has emerged as one of Europe’s strongest supporters of Ukraine and recently sent over 200 Soviet-designed T-72 tanks to the Ukrainians in an escalation of NATO military aid.
On top of the military response, Pelosi said the “strongest sanctions” are also necessary “to make the case” that Russia’s war was not tolerable. “We shouldn’t do anything less because of a threat from Russia,” she said.
The US military response to the war has involved pouring weapons into Ukraine, providing Ukrainians with intelligence to target Russian troops, and training Ukrainian forces on how to use US weapons. President Biden has repeatedly ruled out sending troops to Ukraine to fight Russia directly over the risks of starting World War III, which could quickly spiral into nuclear war.
But despite the risks, ultra-hawks in Washington are eyeing ways to get the US directly involved. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) has introduced a bill for a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) that would give President Biden war powers to intervene in Ukraine if Russia uses chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons.

Today is the anniversary of the tragedy in the city of Odessa. On May 2, 2014, people defending their right to speak Russian gathered near the Trade Union building in Odessa.
At that time, a large number of neo-Nazis from the Western and Central regions of Ukraine arrived in Odessa to prevent pro-Russian demonstrations in the Russian-speaking city. Ukrainian Nazis attacked peaceful protesters.
None of the victims had weapons. The Nazi crowd armed with Molotov cocktails, firearms, and cold weapons, spurred on by their leaders, took the building into a tight ring and set it on fire.
People who attempted to escape, jumped out of windows or ran out of the building, were beaten to death or shot.
Then the Ukrainian Nazis broke into the building and tortured the survivors. On this day, 48 civilians were killed by the Nazis, including 7 women one of whom was pregnant. A total of 220 people turned to hospitals that day for help.
“Progressive Western society” shrug the tragedy in Odessa off. The names of many Ukrainian nazis involved in this tragedy are widely known. They openly boasted of the crimes they had committed, and in the most brutal details. So far, none of them have been detained or convicted by the Ukrainian authorities. Some of them are currently in the Rada.
The Odessa tragedy more than any other action is what guaranteed that a civil war broke out in the east. Immediately Crimea held a plebiscite and seceded from Ukraine and eventually were annexed by Russia.

Russia showing clear ‘casualty aversion’, as troops forced to retreat from Kharkiv
A Ukrainian counter-offensive pushed Russian forces 25 miles east of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, US officials said on Monday night.
They also said Russian gains in Donbas had been “minimal at best” and “quite frankly anaemic”, and Vladimir Putin’s troops appeared to be displaying a risk aversion to casualties.
A senior US defence official said: “They were hoping to get Kharkiv and hold it.”
The official added that in areas of Donbas they were “moving in and then declaring victory, and then withdrawing their troops only to let the Ukrainians take it back.
“There’s a casualty aversion that we continue to see by the Russians now.”
The official said Russian advances in the Donbas were “very cautious, very tepid”.
He said about 70 of the 90 155mm howitzers promised to Ukraine had now been delivered, along with tens of thousands of rounds, and training for Ukrainian soldiers.
Some of Moscow’s most elite units, including its Airborne Forces, have suffered the highest levels of attrition in the first 68 days of the conflict while one quarter of Russia’s forces used in the invasion was now “combat ineffective”.
The Kremlin has committed over 120 battalion tactical groups, each numbering between 600 to 1,000 soldiers, to Ukraine, which amounts to about 65 per cent of Russia’s entire ground combat strength, according to the report.
The Ministry of Defence said it would “probably take years for Russia to reconstitute these forces”

NATO has indeed been caught by surprise of how the Ukrainians not only have held the line against the Russian army, but also counter-attacked and driven them back on several occasions.
Russia is about halfway there. They have the southern coast to Crimea for their land bridge. They have most of Luhansk. Push the Ukrainians a little further north in Donetsk and then take Odessa to connect with their supporters in Moldova. That’d be a massive victory. Game over for them. From then on they can play defense and call the invasion off. Not sure how long the rest will take but the Ukranians are losing ground.
