The future of Israel-Lebanon talks were already in significant doubt last week, with Israel openly talking about a long-term occupation and the talks apparently adjourned until September. Saturday’s attack adds substantially to the questions.
On Saturday, Israeli forces attacked and killed at least 11 people and wounded 19 others. Women and children were among the slain in the attacks, which targeted a civilian home in Ansar and a two-storey building in Deir al-Zahrani.
The attacks, the deadliest since June, immediately raised further questions about the negotiations, and the Arab League warned the violations of Lebanese sovereignty threatened to undermine the international diplomatic efforts. The concern is that instead of talks, Israel is once again on the path of escalation.

Itamar Ben-Gvir certainly hopes so. On Sunday, the hawkish Israeli National Security Minister said it was time for Israel to stop settling for merely “neutralizing threats” and that Israel should instead just “crush Beirut” outright.
Defense Minister Israel Katz defending the Saturday killings as a retaliation against Hezbollah over a drone strike which injured occupation soldiers earlier on Saturday, despite the large number of civilians killed, vowing “no score in any arena will remain unsettled.”
While the US was previously criticizing Katz for planning a long-term occupation of Lebanon, administration officials insisted Hezbollah bears “sole responsibility” for everything that Israel does in Lebanon, and that the disarmament of Hezbollah is the path forward.
