Saudi-Led Airstrikes Target Houthis in Central Yemen’s Maarib

Officials claim vehicles destroyed, heavy casualties

Pro-Saudi officials are reporting heavy Saudi airstrikes against Yemen’s Maarib Province over the weekend, saying dozens of Houthi vehicles were destroyed and that there were “heavy casualties.”

Strikes centered on Maarib and also Hajjah. The Saudi-led coalition reports 22 military vehicles were destroyed in the airstrikes, and dozens killed and wounded, though no exact figures were offered.

The Houthis still control several districts in Maarib, though the southern part of the province has been lost in recent  months as the war has focused in other parts of Yemen.

Over the course of 2021, airstrikes killed thousands of Houthis in Maarib. Though the Houthis were able to keep sending reinforcements and took much of the province, the huge death toll reflects the Saudis’ decision to keep relying on airstrikes.
