With several Israeli airstrikes against Syria seemingly every week, it has come to feel like the new normal. There are rarely serious engagements in Syria’s own war anymore, but airstrikes are consistent, and generally without Israel wanting to comment.
It’s a tired problem for the region, and Syria’s close ally, Russia, appears to have had enough, and intends to take actions to limit ongoing Israeli raids. This is going to be done largely by way of upgrading Syria’s missile defenses.
Russia has sold Syria some substantial missile defense systems over the years, with S-300s a big part of the arsenal. Israel is awash in advanced US weapons, the types of which the Russian defensive weapons are meant to counter.
While Israel doesn’t comment on what it is attacking or why most of the time, they do sometimes get angry when their missiles are intercepted, and tend to couple any of their attacks with a secondary attack on the missile defense systems.
Mixed into all these concerns is Israel’s common use of Lebanese airspace, without permission, to attack Syria. This often puts the Israeli warplanes close to Russian bases in Syria, which Russia has warned Israel about a few times.
We don’t always get confirmations on behind-the-scenes talk, but Israel has at times made reference to “understandings” they had with Russia, and Russia is now talking about their own sense that the US isn’t going to object if they stop Israeli attacks on Syria.
That might be surprising, as Israel would probably be unhappy at any limitations of their wars, and would expect the US to go along with them in complaining about that.
Israel’s mastery of deception has bern losing its magic lately. Israel claimed forever the “understanding” with Russia — to signal to Syria and Arab world at large that Russia will not stop Israel’s attacks.
The return in kind — Russia claiming that it has “understanding” with US — that US would not object Russians stopping Israel’s raids on Syria.
Of course, there is no such understanding.
What is happening in the region is a subtle and permanent change.
It was Iran that was billed as Israel’s rival — no more. Russia and China are architecting new security framework: Turkey and Egypt.
US interests suffered as a result of Israel’s Gaza bombing. It allowed Egypt to interfere, putting US in the middle. This is only the begining of intervention. Now with Turkey, Iran snd Egypt becoming Israel’s rivals — US will have harder time defending Israel — and alienating everybody else.

When it comes to Israel, Russia (among other countries) seems to suffer from schizophrenia. How else would you explain its support of Israel against their own best interests? There is similarly inconsistent Russian behavior when it comes to Turkey. Some call it 3-D chess level of thinking, which is beyond my brain capabilities. It’s possible but I’m still not confident whether it’s brilliant or stupid.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel%E2%80%93Russia_relations
Maybe a taste of their own medicine will stop them?
Na, wishful NATO thinking, 3-D has become obvious even to flat-earthers.
Israel was always = US. Now, the stretch between the two has become obvious.
Let us put it plainly. Eurasian integration is for real. There is nothing US or collective NATO can do to change the trajectory of SCO support of Asian rim — Turkey, Iran and Pakistan. And at present, SCO by pulling in Egypt and Saudi Arabia has created a ring of challengers to Israel. Moves are never made until foundation is laid.
And it is now laid. Rash Netanyahu has bombed Gaza out of habit — not realizing that a new move was to be played on the chessboard. The move by Egypt — entering Gaza, bringing in ambulances and emergency supplies.
US had to react — and fast. Because losing Egypt was a non starter.
US was under impression that it could poke Egypt on human rights at will. Shocker, Egypt was willing to gently poke US by ignoring Israels absolute prohibition on intervening in Gaza, bringing aid of any kind. Egypt is bringing in construction equipment. Another no no.
Russia is stepping in as appropriate.
Turkey, Iran and Russia have just issued JOINT statement that condemns Israel for bombing Syria, for violating international law, humanitarian law and violating sovereignty of Syria and neighboring states airspace.
Missed this event?
Missed new round of Astana meetings on Syrian constitution. Oh well — we must listen only to approved news.
And blame Turkey — for what? For undermining NATO? How? By behaving badly towards Russia? That would be loved by NATO, right? Helping Idlib? US should love it?
Messing up Russia’s plans? US would be happy. So, what is the Turkey hate spewing at present? Clearly, Turkey is doing something to displease NATO — and it is not just S-400.
Why is it that US opinion poling in Turkey found out that population by 79% margin prefers Russia as an ally to US. Any reason for that?
So, what is the unhappiness all about? Why hang eagerly in every political statement that point out friendly noises from Turkey to Ukraine? Hello — Ukraine is a neighbor, and you always speak nicely about your neighbors.
But, I am hearing many buts.
Wishful thinking — Turkey is gone, Egypt is going, going gone. Saudis are going, going gone.
And Israel more exposed than ever. Nothing happens overnight. Russian constitutional change has signaled the future. International loyalties to Israel are being curtailed. Ben & Jerries are the trend,
Some context of the Russian situation is helpful to understand the problem.
First, Russia has always had a sizeable population of troublemakers that infiltrated and destroyed Russia from within starting with the Bolshevik revolution. They caused massive problems in the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union by inviting American “advisors” into the country. Russians call them the “Fifth Column” and most of them have dual citizenship with Israel and Russia. Much like American politics, those dual citizens have controlled Russia for decades and caused untold suffering. Putin has only recently been able to purge them from Russian government by banning anyone with dual Russian-Israeli citizenship from holding ANY important government office. Elected or appointed. One can imagine the outrage in Tel Aviv. So, until very recently, those dual citizens made it very difficult for Putin to properly punish Israel.
Second, the Russian military has always valued real world combat testing for military gear. That is one reason the Soviets and now Russians have armed enemies of the US. The real world combat trials of Russian gear has been invaluable. Israel currently supplies ample opportunity for Russians to test cutting edge military gear against the absolute best NATO can offer. Israel ALWAYS has the best and most expensive gear NATO can field and will use it on their neighbors almost on command. If Russia wants to test a new system against NATO systems, they simply need to station it near Israel and like clockwork, Israel will launch an attack almost daily.
So now, thanks to Israel, Russia knows for a fact their systems would defeat NATO in real world combat.
I believe it when I see it, “IBIWISI.” Justice seems ill served. The Turks owe Russia a good fighter/pilot who was fighting Al Qaeda terrorists. 12 Russians killed on an airplane shot down mistakenly by Syria during a reckless Israeli attack. Then the mysterious crash of a military plane full of Russian military orchestra/staff remains unsolved. They say patience is a virtue, but man this is a whole lot of patience to display.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-airplane/all-92-on-syria-bound-russian-military-jet-killed-in-crash-including-60-from-red-army-choir-idUSKBN14E02Y
It is precisely this sort of excrement that caused the formation of the state of Israel, and justifies its continuation.
I believe everything I wrote is accurate. The role of Ashkenazim in the Bolshevik revolution is well documented. Also, their role as oppressive oligarchs during the disastrous 1990s is well known to Russians also.
Lastly, Russia did recently ban dual citizens from holding high office. This move was aimed squarely at Russians holding Israeli passports. Why did Putin feel the need to resort to such extreme measures? Just how many problems were they causing?
You can intellectualize all you want-the idea of a secret group of troublemakers of an unspoken ethnic group attacking the poor Czar is obscene .
Mar Man,
Now that you’ve been explicit in your meaning, you win a prize: One opportunity to knock it off.
You replied to jake, but addressed me by name.
As a “mod” your comment should be interpreted as a warning to “knock it off”.
Are you posting as a moderator or a participant in the discussion? One should not do both because debating other readers is acceptable while debating moderators is not advisable.
If posting as a moderator, please be specific as to what I may have done wrong and the potential consequences of such actions.
Yes, I am posting as a moderator. Sorry if I was unclear about that. Site guidelines:
“You’re entitled to your opinion. You’re not entitled to use Antiwar.com’s facilities to publish slurs or supremacist claims based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, or to link to sites promoting such material. We don’t want that stuff here.”
The potential consequence is being banned from posting here.
What post violated the guidelines?
Please state specifically, I still do not know.
I have posted no known slurs or supremacist claims of any kind.
To my knowledge, everything I have posted is historically accurate.
There’s no need to play stupid. You can read your own posts in this thread. They are what they are, and you can knock it off or you can go away.
Is there a way to escalate this? I would like someone above your position to look into this. I question your ability to moderate this site. You act more like a biased participant in this discussions.
You accuse me of acting “stupid”. You have repeatedly warned me to “knock it off” but refuse to articulate in any way what I have done or what posts offended.
If you, as a moderator, cannot inform me of what you believe I am doing wrong, then I will assume you are just a regular commenter that is harassing me.
Yes, there’s a way to escalate this — my boss is akeaton (at) antiwar.com
As for informing you of what you did “wrong,” I did inform you of what you did that violated Antiwar.com’s commenting guidelines (whether that’s “wrong” or not is beside the point). All you have to do is look up the thread a couple of posts to your admission that you were engaging in ethnic slurs, and then look down to my posting of the guideline concerning that.
Blaming “the Jews” (or “the Palestinians” or “the blacks” or “the Muslims”) for this, that, and the other isn’t allowed here. You don’t have to like it. That’s how it is whether you like it or not.
You got a warning instead of an immediate ban because, unlike some commenters who are no longer with us, it’s not all you do.

What I never understood is why, during the years of Obama’s proxy war against Syria, Russia sold their S-300 defense system to Syria at a time when their newer, more advanced, S-400 defense system was completed and being sold to other countries like China, India, Iran, etc. At that time Russia was deeply involved in stopping Obama’s proxy war where both Syrian and Russian troops had died. Can you offer any insight on why they may have done this?
First, I am no expert. Everything I know is is simply gathered from public sources and my conclusions based on that.
But, if forced to speculate, I would cite a few possible reasons:
1. The S-400 is expensive (by Russian standards) and difficult to make. They are in severely limited supply and Russia does not have many to spare.
2. Russia has placed the S-400 in certain strategic location in Syria under Russian command.
3. The S-400 might be considered overkill for the other threats facing Syria.
4. Russia may have feared the Syrian military was incapable of properly defending the S-400 near Israeli borders and one might be captured.
5. Any spare S-400 systems not needed by Russia are used for massive political leverage in negotiations with other countries. Russia used the S-400 bargaining chip successfully with Turkey and Saudi Arabia I believe.
In short, I do not know the actual reason for restricting the S-400 to only a few locations in Syria and must guess.
Thank you so much for your valuable insight; what you wrote makes perfect sense.
Why not inadvertently strike at one of those jets? And then bow down in abject apology, the way Israel likes, and claim oi it vas a mistek.
Russia was fool to think that US would stop Israel air strikes against Syria all along…! Lebanon must agree that Syrian anti-air missiles could strike Israeli jets over its soil… When an Israeli jet gets shut down over Lebanon, they get the point…! That’s is the only effective way to put a halt on these nonsense airstrikes by Israel…!
Somehow, someway, these israeli thugs and criminals must be shut down; whatever it takes!
strengthen air def in Syria, and why not Lebanon also. These air attacks are international crimes and the world turns a blind eye-shut them down!

The most abrupt end to Israel exporting genocidal apartheid is to cut their US financial support.
BDS will help; I bought some Ben & Jerry’s ice cream yesterday and ate the entire pint in one day.
Ben & Jerry’s ice cream makes a delicious statement. Savor the flavor of a peaceful Palestine.
Russia and China need to end Israel’s presumed “right of conquest” policy it had adopted since its birth
China needs to give back Tibet to its own people, and end its invasion plans for Taiwan. As for Russia,it is a country at war with its own people, and a very long history of territorial aquisition.
