Described by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as the deadliest strike since June 2018, Israeli warplanes carried out a flurry of attacks overnight in eastern Syria, killing at least 57, including Syrian soldiers and Shi’ite militia members.
18 strikes were hit along the Syria-Iraq border. The slain included Syrian troops, Iraqi Shi’ite militias and Afghan militia members. Israel refused to comment on the attacks, as they typically do with strikes on Syria. The attacks came after a secret meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Israel has been escalating attacks on targets in Syria for awhile, and this was the fourth set of attacks in the past two weeks. The attacks are seen as trying to provoke a response from Iran, while Iran is trying to wait for Trump to leave office.
US officials are pointing to their own involvement with this, saying Mike Pompeo provided the intelligence to Mossad. They suggested the intelligence was about Iranian arms. It’s not clear why so many troops were killed if warehouses were the target.
This is a much bigger attack than most, in which Israel kills a handful of Shi’ites, and the Israeli press labels them Iranians, even though they rarely are. It isn’t clear if any Iranians were slain in this attack, though some of the slain have not been identified yet.
The Syrian Observatory suggested Iranian-made weapons were being stored in this area where the attacks took place. Again, Israel hasn’t commented directly, so its unclear why they attacked or what they intended to target.
Where’s the UN? Isn’t this type of activity what the UN was created for?
Is Mike Pompeo a Mossad agent?? The CIA should be abolished immediately, but I’m deeply concerned on what national security secrets he’s given them.
Israel says it has the “right to self defense”(which they do!) but if any other nation uses this “justification” and attacks Israel all hell would break loose. Double standards.
Israel was attacked by its neighbors on day one. That means that Israel’s neighbors are the aggressors. Aggressors can’t claim self-defense.
“Aggressors can’t claim self-defense.”
Which is why Israel’s claims of self defense now fail.
I continue wondering about the reporting on Syria. Syrian Observatory is UK intelligence. The one man operation out of Coventry is not observing anything. Their sources are UK intelligence or whatever militants in Syria are West supported and approved. Which includes Kurds.
I do not object using the source. but its veracity must be questionable, in the same way one would question Mossad.
The purpose of the attacks on this region has nothing to do with Iran. Israel and US do not want Syria and Iraq to have complete control of their border. By creating areas that are not under sovereign control of either country, space is created for infiltration of militants — like the space around Al-Tanf that hugs Syria-Jordan border. Having failed to establish a Sunni state to control the space on Iraqi-Syrian border, and having failed to support Kurdish “autonomy” to separate Turkey and Syria — all that remains is to disrupt normalcy in the region by not letting any state control its borders on land and air. Air control in Syria is abridged by an understanding with Russia, This is the reason provocations are limited to US air controlled area. It is a small area, but sufficient to shield “the desert” from where “ISIS” attacks are launched into SAA controlled area.
Such tactics are disruptive to the region and its ability to open up transport and trade. But they are also cementing the regional consensus that US, and wider Western influence is toxic. It takes a long time for such opinions to cement on popular level. For a long time, Saddam Hussein was blamed for problems in Iraq. The belief festered and resulted in horrendous sectarian warfare, Kurdish secessionism and weak state. It progressed into Saudi-US creation, Caliphate — a desired Sunni controlled segments of Syria and Iraq. But Iraq and Syria beat the well supplied and trained militants back — on the way to complete control. US stance changed from periodic “killing of leaders”, to Trump’s outright call on fighting ISIS.
By taking the lead in destroying its own creation, US was appeasing Israel, by becoming a factor in post-ISIS era, This cost US an ally — Saudi Crown Prince MB Nayaf. was ousted and nemesis MBS took power.
An entirely new dynamic took place, and Israel is ever since trying to fix US mistake — provide for disruption a Caliphate and Kurdish states were supposed to do.
Call it interim chaos generation. Blaming Iran is just a convention. Because the Imperial agenda cannot progress without degrading Iran’s political Eurasian orientation. A chaotic Iran would do just fine.
But the growing consensus — from the street to the governments — is that Saddam Hussein, ISIS, Iran, are smokescreens to continue keeping the region, and generations of its people, poor, crisis ridden.
