A new poll from Politico-Morning Consult shows the American public substantially less on board with escalatory violence against Iran than media coverage of the situation would generally lead one to believe.
The poll showed the decision to assassinate top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani was highly controversial. Despite weeks of vilifying Soleimani, only 44% support his killing, and 38% continue to disapprove.
There was a lot more unity on the response to Iran’s retaliation for the killing, with 71% approving of not responding militarily to that, and only 14% disapproving. It seems further escalating the conflict is something almost nobody wanted.
Morning Consult said they believe voters are paying more attention to national security issues, and that security is the number one issue with voters. While the threat of war with Iran has declined somewhat, it’s still very much a concern.
A second poll from NPR-PBS-Marist, showed a split on party lines over the question of Trump’s handling on Iran. This poll did not appear to ask specific questions on the policy, and seems to have just been an effort to find political leanings. Unsurprisingly, Republicans overwhelmingly supported Trump, and Democrats overwhelmingly opposed him on Iran.
With America so deeply political divided, this is likely not a particularly revelatory result, though on the whole it still pointed to a deep split on the Iran conflict.
What a misleading headline. Brain dead Americans believing more MSM propaganda to the tune of 44% to 38%. And I can only imagine what the number of Americans would have been against a military response to Iran’s retaliation if one precious American life had been lost. It certainly wouldn’t have been 71%.
The protests that filled the streets in many US cities are proof that most Americans opposed the assassination of IRGC Commander Qassem Soleimani. You forgot, wars, that millions of Americans have PCs and access to the Internet; thus, the poll was mostly right, in that the majority opposed the assassination. I, for one, opposed it.
The poll didn’t say a majority opposed, it said 38% opposed while 44% were in favor. Read some comment sections elsewhere. We have some sick puppies out there.
Well, the SFGate identifies the MeK as an “Iranian dissident group”…so I’d say any poll results of the average ‘murkan are only going to reveal how ignorant most people are.
Pollsters need to find out if voters want to pay for hundreds of billions per year to maintain forces globally? Even better, do voters believe the expense is worthwhile? I believe most Americans are unable to honestly answer such questions. They have been subject to 70 yrs of false information about global “threats”.
“I believe most Americans are unable to honestly answer such questions. They have been subject to 70 yrs of false information about global “threats”. ”
This is perhaps the most important feature of our post-truth reality. I have often posted that Reagan’s Neocon CIA chief Wm Casey infamously said, “We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.”
This is where we are today. Nearly the entire population — left, right, center — is disconnected from reality. With this level of befuddlement, the people cannot assert their will. They are controlled by their own distorted, corrupted beliefs. Just push the right button — “Terrorist!, Terrorist!, Terrorist!” or “Russia!, “Russia!, “Russia!” etc — and they jump like Pavlov’s dogs.
Russia did not interfere in our election. Iran is not our enemy. Iran was not developing a nuclear weapon. (They were developing “breakout capacity”, which gives them deterrence while remaining compliant under the NPT.) Saudi Arabia, not Iran, is the leading state sponsor of terrorism (if you ignore Israel & Israel’s US puppet). Soleimani was a hero of the fight against ISIS, not a terrorist.
Interesting times.
I do not call that an important difference!! Obviously the MSM have affected (infected) the population.
Not to worry, it won’t happen again unless it’s with permission.
