Having stuck to his guns, at least for a couple of months, on the need to withdraw US ground troops from Syria, President Trump is now loudly endorsing the new plan, which is to leave some US forces in Syria for an open-ended amount of time.
Trump responded to a joint letter
from several members of Congress by saying he agrees 100% and that “all
is being done.” The letter said it was essential to keep US ground
troops in Syria “to ensure stability” in Syria.
The letter also speculated that keeping US troops in Syria would mean
that the US could probably talk other countries into committing forces
as well, and would prevent Turkey’s invasion of western Syria to fight
the Kurds.
Over the past two weeks, US officials have backed off the promised
pullout, promising to keep 200 troops in Syria, then later upping that
figure to 400 US troops. There are estimated to be 2,000 US troops in
Syria now, though it’s not clear that the administration is done
backpedaling on the promise, so 400 may only be the beginning of this
enduring presence.
Extending those troop deployments was initially done relatively quietly,
with President Trump not talking about it at all. Now he seems to be
embracing a Congressional narrative which he’d previously disavowed.
Having committed to abandoning his previous commitment, however, he
seemingly just as enthusiastic and 100% behind the not-pullout as he was
with the pullout.
Somebody bought the moron off again.
More and more, I’m starting feel that that is all Trump’s foreign policy really amounts to, the one defining principal among the chaos: Who’s got the cheddar? Wait? No, the others got it better.
Erdogan throws Trump a scrap and he’s out. Bibi or whoever-the-f**k throws another and he’s back in. Art of the deal? It’s more like art of the slut. He’ll hitch his wagon to the sweetest sugar daddy until the next one comes along. Maybe Putin should have bought him off. We could have had peace for an entire half hour! What a way to burn a Ruble.
If you look at the letter that Trump signed and said he agreed with 100%, he put parenthesis around the paragraph that contained the words “that emboldened Iran”. So I’m guessing it was probably Bibi that made him 100% convinced. What’s so ridiculous about that letter is that Iran had more to do with defeating ISIS than the US and was invited by the sovereign government of Syria while we weren’t. F**k international law I guess.
Yeah. Iran is a dog whistle for Trump. Neo cons and Netanyahu know how to use it.
Nice doggie Trump. Good dog.
If he wants a second term, he has to do what he’s told.
What an ass clown. MIGA
or MAZA – Make America Zionism’s Army.
Please mr trump let’s stay out of Syria like you promised!
I wish the commander in chief would just issue an order to the troops to leave and any general who disobeys would be court martialed.
Like Dr Paul said In the 2004 debates, “we just marched in, why can’t we just march out?”
Boy that was one helluva 6D chess move !
Spanky is just warming up for his favorite move…the 38dd…nonconsensual grope.
Well, MAGA fans, how are you gonna spin this one?
All the criticisms are true – Trump backed down.
BUT the balance of forces that determine that include all of us.
Please give me links to the chorus of progressive voices that sang Trump’s praises as he sought to do the withdrawal. I will save you time – there was no chorus. Trump Derangement Syndrome silenced those who should have been supporting the move loud and clear and praising Trump for it to strengthen him.
Caliman, were you among that small chorus?
If not, then you are complicit in the failure of that policy. Complicit.
Trump Derangement Syndrome has burnt up you brain cells.
Sad; we used to think so highly of you.
That goes for the perennial dave and wars r u.s. bots on this site. (Shh they do not know they are bots. Their minds were fried during one of the Maddow hypnosessions.)
But of course its my fault that Trump backed down. If only I had been more “loud and clear” with my backing of the pullout, the Donald would have kept his spine and not bowed to Bibi. I’m amazed at how you brain dead Trump zombies can manage to claim the people that bitch about Trump’s blind loyalty to the parasite have TDS. It’s you that suffers from some ungodly perverted hero worshipping that has you backing this tool at every turn.
By the way, I don’t watch Maddow, FOX, MSNBC, CNN or anything that flashes across the tube. So I don’t know about anything she might have said unless it’s some quote from her on some article here. I guess you must watch her if you think she might have the power of hypnosis over us TDS sufferers.
Hang on … If you’ve been reading these stories and the comments you’d know that we’ve been strongly supporting this move (and Korea and Afghanistan …). Heck, I’ve always supported his initial useless NATO argument. BUT we’ve also strongly doubted that the conman would actually go through with it and not flip flop, because his “position” seems to depend on what he sees on tv and the last live person he talks with.
And we were, sadly, right.
Shame on you for judging him by his actions.
🙂 … aren’t we supposed to be a Christian nation? “By their fruits shall you know them …”?
If we are, then, we wouldn’t abandon Christians. Do you have the slightest clue of what’s going on over there?
I have a few clues, though outsiders (both of us) can’t claim to ever KNOW what’s going on. That is in fact one of the very good reasons to stay out: you don’t know what you think you know.
The goal of US militancy in the ME is to destroy functioning societies, Christian, or not. This is what we observe. To foment chaos, arming random factions, destroying infrastructure is part of this plan. The less is clear, the better the plan.
We all (including us libertarians, as well as progressives) sang praises of Trump’s supposed common sense moves, you just weren’t paying attention, because you are so blinded by Trump hero worship.
And, by the way, I haven’t watched a mainstream media news broadcast in more than five years, and certainly not Maddow.
Or are you saying that because we were skeptical and didn’t have absolute faith that Trump would follow through, and that we should slavishly worship him regardless of his previous actions, that was why he backed down? Sort of like with Uri Geller failing to bend spoons in a controlled environment, it’s because of our lack of faith, right?
Non of us were as naive as you are. Nice hissy fit though. The true voice of delusion thinks the orange baby Jesus isn’t just another Obomber serving red Kool aid instead of blue Kool aid.
Orange Mussolini is already staging a coup for the Koch Bro’s in Venezuela :

Big man, abandon Christians to genocide, Obama can be blamed for ISIS and all of their acts, anti-interventionists should take blame for the Rwandan genocide if you are so against the USA’s actions, plenty of ugly but it’s not in defeating ISIS.
How about creating ISIS in the first place? Can the USA be blamed for that? Destroying Iraq, disbanding its army, creating chaos that fostered terrorism in an area that was previously secure? How about working with the Saudis and our other “friends” in the area to sponsor the terrorists who have been trying to destroy the secular state of Syria for the past decade?
It’s Assad who is protecting the Christians and other religious minorities there, not us. If we wanted to protect the Christians, we’d leave and let Assad take control back again.
I wholeheartedly agree, Caliman. Yes, the US can be blamed for helping create ISIS, by destroying Iraq, disbanding its army, and creating chaos that fostered terrorism in an area that was previously secure.
And, what about working with the Saudis and other “friends” in the area to sponsor the terrorists who’ve been trying to destroy the secular state of Syria for the past decade?
You’re perfectly right, it’s Assad who’s protecting the Christians and other religious minorities there, certainly, not us. If we really wanted to protect the Christians, we’d leave and let Assad take control back again.
Brilliantly said, Caliman, brilliantly said.
The Christian communities in Iraq and Syria, probably the oldest Christian community in the world, were perfectly secure before the US invaded Iraq. Saddam’s deputy PM and foreign minister (Tareq Aziz) was a Christian.
I wonder how many Christians are left in Iraq now … 15 years after our invasion?
Decoy soft targets. I hate to be one of the 200 in that place.
Why shouldn’t they stay forever? None are coming home in body-bags. Syria is safer for Americans than Detroit or Baltimore.
“safer for Americans” yes, as far as we know. Yet, the reason for leaving is for what those troops have done in Syria, the equivalence of rubbling Detroit and Baltimore, with an unaccounted for death and mayhem toll.
Maybe someone at the prop room of Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer can find and present to the President the medal awarded to the “Cowardly Lion” in the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz. The feckless one can wear his medal when a modicum of resolve is required. Jared permitting.
Prez. Trump,,not the smart bizzness man I thought he would be, no ballz.
Right decision. We should see it out. Obama withdrew troops and that was the disaster that led to ISIS, thanks anti-interventionists and antiwar morons, we thank you for ISIS as we thank you for the Rwanda genocide (no intervention). We should not have intervened in 2003 in Iraq, fine. Good argument. No reason to abandon innocents now who might not have ever gotten in that position without us being there in the first place.
Nice warmonger logic….we should stay because we screwed up and went. The Pentagon has a pundit position for you on some fly over cable channel.
Excuse me, the Christians and Kurds died on the ground fighting ISIS. We gave the SDF air support and ISIS is virtually defeated. We shouldn’t have gotten involved but we did.
All you’ve got is name-calling.
“Obama withdrew, and that led to ISIS “…The Syrian civil war was caused secondarily, because of the millions of refugees from Iraq, from Afghanistan, from Palestine into Syria. Primarily it was caused by the entities which armed those refugees, and sent in mercenaries to organize them. Just because a US bomb falls somewhere in Syria, doesnt make the people underneath them ISIS. The main US role is to rubble as much infrastructure as it takes to keep those refugees not killed outright, to continue as a refugee problem. Nice plan if you hate people and want them to take up arms against you.
….
Ah come on Dave, What’s another forever war for profit looting expedition gonna hurt ? You really need to learn to pity your billionaires properly !
Time to grab the Nobel Peace Award back from obama and give it to any equally undeserving trump. trump is day by day becoming more of a non entity in foreign policy decisions.
US foreign policy as always….destructive and schizophrenic.
