In the past few months, US officials have increasingly found it convenient to blame Russia for anything that goes wrong, no matter how little credibility such an accusation has. NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, US Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, may have gone the farthest, however, saying that it was conceivable that Russia was providing unspecified “supply” to the Afghan Taliban.
Gen. Scaparrotti told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he had “seen the influence of Russia of late,” and that “perhaps” this included supplies, though he neither offered any details on what sort of supplies he was accusing Russia of “perhaps” giving the Taliban, nor any evidence that anything he said was true.
There is plenty of reason to believe it isn’t true, however. Russia fought a long, unsuccessful occupation of Afghanistan itself in the 1970s and 1980s, against a US-backed Islamist force that eventually became the Taliban. Since the US occupation began in 2001, Russia has publicly supported the US, and at times like the US and NATO use their territory for a supply route.
There were reports of Russia trying to send out feelers to the Taliban and other factions in Afghanistan when NATO started talking up their withdrawal from Afghanistan, as Russia has a defense deal with some of Afghanistan’s former Soviet neighbors, and is extremely concerned about the war spreading across central Asia. Such efforts likely have been abandoned, however, with the US extending its occupation more or less permanently, and ensuring that the Taliban will be busy for quite some time.

well it makes your defeat less embarrassing. Karma.. ain’t it a bitch
General it’s more plausible America supplied arms to ISIS.
Is that supposed to explain why you cannot decisively defeat the Taliban (who are living in the seventh century) in sixteen years you lying sack of deceit!
Well, we KNOW that USA & Friends have supplied jihadi groups in Syria!
I heard from reliable sources that Scaparrotti likes fucking goats.
The Russians actually seem to value stability. So I doubt the story is true. Russia has really limited resources compared to us and in this case the blowback is not far from their borders. In fact all the so-called evil actors Russia-Iran have barely done anything. The support for the Talib seems to be coming from Pakistan (I know lets give them $$ and F-16″s that’ll show em!) It seems as usual we ignore the actual problem and seem to seek windmills to slay
Turnabout is fair play.
The answer we’re looking for is to end the fight over Trump’s supposed support of Russia. It was never real to begin with and he hasn’t promoted it since his campaign speech.
But the Dems have a bone in their teeth and aren’t going to let it go. The Repubs don’t want to talk about it other than with their halfhearted support of Trump. And even Hillary has to be basking in the excitement, even though she could be starting to get scared over what she started with Trump in the campaign.
If I was Trump, I would FIRE this general.
So this Scaparotti guy never knew who funded the Taliban, the Mujahedeen or Islamic terrorists in general? And this guy is a general in the US military? What kind of pond scum do they get to fill these jobs?
