For his first time since taking office, President Trump has spoken on the phone with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, described as a relatively brief but favorable conversation in which Trump invited Abbas to visit the White House sometime soon.
Abbas was said to have pushed the idea of a two-state solution during the conversation, arguing that a lasting peace should take the form of a Palestinian state existing side by side with the Israeli one. Trump had previously said he wasn’t particularly concerned with the form the peace took.
Trump was said to have assured that he’d cooperate with both sides, but to insist that the final form of the peace deal had to be agreed upon between the Israelis and the Palestinians.directly. Israeli officials have made clear that no Palestinian state could ever be permitted to have control over its own borders, under any circumstances.
With Israel’s current far-right government, any peace deal is unlikely, as officials seem to agree on the need to ensure Palestinians don’t get the vote in a one state solution, but are split on whether or not to try to annex the Palestinians’ land outright.
Looks like one state with reservations for the Pals … just like the USA with Native Americans.
The reservations will be physically located in Jordan or Egypt – the settlers will be incapable of identifying any land in “Greater Israel”- no matter how uninhabitable- that they will be willing to cede to them. And as they are driven out of their own country, the settlers will hiss at them, “Another word from you, and your next home will be at the bottom of the Dead Sea”.
Actually, the “Palestinians” didn’t really have a “country”. They were / are more like tribal dwellers in a land. Nonetheless, they are being driven from the lands they occupied and called their own. To believe a “Palestinian State” could be formed with a stable functioning government is foolishness. Only a dictatorship form of government would be possible to rule the people’s. And who then would support the dictator financially and thus militarily to keep the dictator in power?
Every time Israel offers to end the occupation, the Palestinians say “No!”
Even Prince Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia (certainly not a Zionist) said that Arafat’s refusal to accept the January 2001 offer was a crime. Thousands of people would die because of Arafat’s decision & not one of those deaths could be justified.
As Clinton later wrote in his memoir:
It was historic: an Israeli government had said that to get peace, there would be a Palestinian state in roughly 97 percent of the West Bank, counting the [land] swap, and all of Gaza, where Israel also had settlements. The ball was in Arafat’s court.
But Arafat would not, or could not, bring an end to the conflict. “I still didn’t believe Arafat would make such a colossal mistake,” Clinton wrote. “The deal was so good I couldn’t believe anyone would be foolish enough to let it go.” But the moment slipped away. “Arafat never said no; he just couldn’t bring himself to say yes.”
Well Abbas just said the two state deal etc. Israel is saying No. Why does Israel say YES to that and get it done. Get a Neutral person to iron out the details and get it over with. The ball is in Netanyahu+Trumps court.
The ball is in Abbas’ court. Abbas always says no to Israeli plans. Let Abbas put forward a plan.
“Abbas always says no to Israeli plans” – because Israeli plans are non-existent. Israel has absolutely no (nada, nein, bupkis) intent to give the Palestinians one square mm of land under any circumstance. It always amazes me that people like you, can cite deals, offers and conditions that never existed. The same people also insist that only Israelis and Palestinians can discuss this and only by themselves – this is so that only liars can cite deals, offers, and conditions which are totally non-existent. In America, this is a whole bullshit industry. Let the sunshine in.
Qaddafi had it right, Dissolve both entities and replace them with one single state, like a neutral Holy Land Federation.
Abbas and the PA are the Israeli enforcers. Palestinians don’t really have a true representative.
This isn’t about peace, the Israelis, or the Palestinians. It’s nothing more important than Trump putting forward an image of being responsible for something.
It’s time to recognize Trump as the enemy of our antiwar cause. If we can become a negligible voice against more war then now is the time to become united on our cause. A first step would be to deal with Raimondo because his name is too big on this site to be ignored. He’s going to have to be turned back to our common cause or he’s going to have to be sent packing.
I’m ready to take the risk of losing my posting privileges on this site by asking for a concerted effort against Raimondo, in the hope that he will come back to reality. I do that with the conviction that the site is useless if we don’t take it on now.
Am I alone or do I have the majority with me?
One state the right solution, with guarantees for equal democratic and humanitarian rights for ALL citizens and the right of return of ALL Palestinian refugees. If not put sanctions on Israel.
don’t worry, Jared Kushner will work it all out. (sarcasm)
