Though there is no indication of any moves along the border itself, US officials are playing up the “threat” of a Russian invasion of Ukraine at some point in the future, saying they reckon the likelihood has increased.
The official Pentagon estimate remains 20,000 Russian troops along the Ukraine frontier, engaged in training exercises in the area. Yet the numbers are constantly being challenged as insufficiently scary, and others are suggesting much grander figures.
Rep. Michael Turner (R – OH) claimed he figured there could be as many as 80,000 Russian troops in the border area, terming that cause for alarm. Ukrainian officials, not to be outdone, came back with a claim of 100,000 Russian troops.
Pentagon officials were reportedly skeptical of the claims, which they said sound much too high. Russia assured the Pentagon last week that they don’t intend to invade Ukraine.

It is evident now that the Russian majorities in the eastern provinces of the Ukraine are afraid and suspicious of the unstable rightist new government and want to return to Russia.Is the west going to block these people who want to determine their own fate? Wouldn't that be undemocratic?
One needs to remember that 20,000 troops are about two regiments. Furthermore, the number of soldiers of a modern army is not its most significant force. How many tanks and troop carriers are
"massed" near the border? What are the activities, if any, at nearby airfields? These reporters seem to think that the Russians can be driven out of Crimea by huffing and puffing.
Hmmm…you used the words "reporters" and "think"…nowadays those 2 words are mutually exclusive. "Reporters" today do not think – they report what they are told to report. Even real journalists today are mostly stenographers and are, generally speaking, averse to working for the truth. As always, there are exceptions. Sad how in the past, the opposite used to be the norm.

Isn't amazing that, with the exception of BBC, none of the major American newspapers or services is reporting the Right Sector almost storming the Rada in Kiev last night, promising to come back today and the Rada agreeing to vote on the removal of the Interior Minister over the assassination of Shatsko Bily? Also some of the top officials of the interim govenment, including the Interior Minister and the leader of the Svoboda party, met to consider banning the Right Sector as a political party. Sounds like major upheaval to me. Does the fact that the MSM has blacked it out so far show its significance and "inconvenience"?
In fact, Obama has cornered Putin and is exploiting his advantage. Putin now has two choices. Either he backs off from an invasion of eastern Ukraine, at which point he is discredited among his own people and will probably be forced out of office or he invades Ukraine and makes inevitable a war which his ramshackle military is condemned to lose, at which point he is discredited among his own people and will probably be forced out of office. Thus, for Putin, the only choice is which foot he is going to shoot himself in. The big disaster is, of course, for Israel. If America won't fight for Europe, it won't fight for Israel either and that all the more so as, if it were to fight for Israel, it would have to do so from Europe, which therefore needs to be solidly behind the US and not furious that the US is fighting for Israel while allowing Putin to tear Europe apart. Also, the US must not be seen to cut and run as soon as it is confronted by a nuclear power, however primitive Russian nuclear weapons may be by today's standards. Those are two messages which the Israel Lobby doesn't want sent to the world. Thus, for Obama, the "secret" is to force Putin to back down on Ukraine.
So Putin is cornered but it's a big disaster for Isreal? And what would Putin "backing down" consist of? Looks like the pro-Western government in Kiev is imploding, so maybe Putin can just sit back and let it bleed.
Putin doesn't have to do anything except watch the gov't in Kiev (such as it is) destroy itself. The great silent majority of Ukrainians will not elect these "nationalist" types, you know the patriots who can't sell out their fellow countrymen down the river fast enough. A free and fair election would leave the Reich Sektor and Svoboda with about 5% of the vote. Funny how they are fighting amongst each other right now.
Obama is a crybaby. He looks the fool, made to be as such by Putin. Obama is exposed as an open liar and a fraud, who only cares about democracy when it runs in his favor. And the more he keeps carrying on, the worse he looks to be and the less respect he deserves.
The situation in the region between the Eastern border of NATO on one side and Russia/Ukraine on the other with Moldavia and Transniestria squeezed in-between reminds me of a well-known act of the Chinese theater/circus in which the actors twirl fragile plates on top of bamboo poles. One mistake and the whole act collapses.
There are, however, serious flaws in my comparison. For openers, I think that these Chinese actors are true professionals who know what they are doing while the actors in the political drama, with the possible exception of Putin, are suspect. Another serious flaw is that the theater/circus act has a planned end which all of the actors know. How does President Obama think that the economic boycott of Russia by us and the EU will ever end? If Putin hands over Snowden? Or if he hands Crimea back to Ukraine? Or when any of this might get done by their successors Heavens only knows how many years into the future?
And lastly in the theater/circus act the plates are not glued to the poles. Some analysts believe that the US vs. Russia plates are glued to their poles by the nuclear arsenals. Really?
