Twitter Unveils Plans for Country-Specific Censorship

Twitter appears to have stepped in a minefield today, announciung its development of the ability to censor posts on a country by country basis, and saying that they intend to use it to censor posts which “might break local laws.”

The announcement was immediately and loudly condemned by a number of anti-censorship and information freedom groups, with early calls for a boycott. Twitter defended the move, saying that some countries have “different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression.”
