In a move that could complicate the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran, the US is arguing that they are still part of the deal, despite withdrawing from it years ago, and is trying to reimpose ‘snapback’ sanctions against Iran under terms of the deal.
The move intends to force the issue of Iran sanctions to the UN Security Council, where the US believes that in vetoing any vote for sanctions relief they would de-facto reimpose all the sanctions in a way no one could stop.
This all rests on the US interpretation of them still having authority under the deal they long ago left, and that’s something several nations would seriously argue against. The US desperation to impose something against Iran is going to make this a major battle at the UN.
While Russia and China will oppose this US move, all other parties, Britain, France, and Germany, also questioned the US authority on this matter, calling it incompatible with the nuclear they that the US already said they withdrew from.
The US “interpretation” is that of a “schoolyard bully” who suddenly wants his ball back when his team is losing the game.
It is up to the other teams to give him a whack behind the ears to pull him into line
But unfortunately bullies will carry the day.Simple.
Those days are fast coming to an end with the economic collapse of the Empire.
But Samson Options still there
Hopefully. But I am skeptical. Israel has maneuvered, I believe Biden nomination and now the lobby will be financing him as well as Trump. And it is almost certain that Harris VP pick has, again an Israeli imprint. Either way be it Trump or Biden Zionists won. More than that yesterday Ha’aretz reported Nutinyahu had enough from Trump an he has no problem with dumping Trump.
I follow Jewish, especially Israeli media to know what is happening or the direction USA a is taking. Shun American MSM. They are rubbish
Russia was correct US wants to have its cake & eat it. They abandoned a deal 2 years ago now because resolution 2231 which endorses the deal names them as a participant state they have the cheek to think they still have rights.
Hey, Uncle Sam: If you don’t play the game, you don’t get to make the rules!
Anything goes! US walked away from the Agreement, the one it voted for in UN, turning the Agreement into UN SC resolution. Walking away can only mean one thing — exit from binding UN resolution. A country doing this must do two things — not violate the Resolution and abstain from any decisions. US is doing both — by reimposing sanctions it violated the Resolution, and by tabling proposals — violated another.
But it is now a new normal for US to impose its views on matters not by any standards having any say in. This applies to Philippines case agains China at Hague Court of Arbitration. US asked for an opinion of a Court having NO jurisdiction over UNCLOS laws, AND without both parties requesting the ruling. And the opinion of a court without competence in the matter has been promoted by US into “award” to Philippines. And US has zero standing in disputes — NOT being signatory to UNCLOS convention.
Same here.
I do not expect Europeans to last. Sooner or later they will find the sophisticated way to avoid doing what US dies not want them to do. So, in an example of such games — EU is obliged under the Agreement to take over and reprocess Iranian spent power plant uranium. They weaseled out, leaving Iran with higher stockpiles. And US is claiming violation of the agreement.
Europe is technologically controlled, and any whiff of curtailing access to these IT and telecom technologies— is a serious threat.
“exit from binding UN resolution”
The only way to exit a binding UN resolution is to exit the UN.
Exactly. And that is what US did by exiting The Agreement.
Since there are no consequences for exiting the very agreement that was enshrined in US SC resolution — we have entered an alternate universe with no rules.
It would not be the first time that resolutions were not followed, but it was the FIRST time a UN SC power EXITED a binding resolution. And having exited the Agreement US did not persuade two other NATO members of UN SC to follow the suit. Another signatory — Germany — was not persuaded either.
At present — we are witnessing the test of US membership in UN. Yesterday, a letter by France, UK and Germany to UN SC has informed US that the notification of 30 day period for invoking snap-back has not been accepted. US can still submit a resolution of its own — but it will depend on the UN SC presiding country in September and October to accept it.
The question of UN SC legitimacy is at stake, and US European partners are in a bind. Neither of them wants to see US dictate the terms to UN SC, where they still have their share of global influence.
Even though for a while now the three NATO members of UN SC voted in unison when it came to East-West divide — this situation is fundamentally different. Siding with US would delegitimize their own adherence to the Agreement. In fact, US is asking them to join the call for snap-back — just as if themselves exited the Agreement.
But if recent history can be the guide, Europe is stuck between self-interest and loyalty to Western alliance — and will choose alliance. No matter how onerous the conditions, no matter the harm to their economy — I cannot imagine this unity in resisting Trump continue.
Unless Europeans are trying to assess their status post-elections. It is almost guaranteed that Biden win will mean continuation of aggressive global posture — the only time Democrats complained when Trump displayed showy inclinations to pursue peace with North Korea or dialogue with Russia.
Thus, for Europeans, the question is — how far can they allow to be assimilated into US battle for global supremacy. Should they go for “compromise” now, or to stop further assimilation into US global supremacy — by carving a role for themselves in a multi-polar order. And in multi-polar order, UN is indispensable.
It is anybody’s guess now — but if European countries cannot keep their unity, any appearance of Europe as geopolitical entity would end with a whimper. Permanently.
For US a Pyrrhic victory. US addiction to lesser power conflicts creates an ever-growing burden. While incapable to grasp the strategic. In the quest for everything — may end up with nothing. US with weak, demoralized and even angry allies is no match for combined Russian-Chinese enemy.
And thus US move against UN SC is just that — painting Russia and China as enemies.
Move to isolate Russia after 2014 failed. Move to isolate China already failed. Upping the ante — by challenging both, is taking risk on an entirely new level.
In the business world, this is what he does. Breaks contracts, or does not honor the contracts, and still sues for gain. Attempting the same approach.
And UN Officially Acts to Defeat US Enforcing Sanctions on Iran…!
Gangster Pompeo warns “the US will use every tool to prevent China & Russia from selling weapons to Iran”.
More bluff than reality.
