Syrian officials say that they are looking at filing an international lawsuit against the United States government over the intended theft of Syrian oil from fields in the country’s northeast.
Since October, President Trump has totally revised the goals of the US war in Syria, entirely around the idea of “securing” the oil, and has been very public about intending to have the US take the oil for themselves.
Syria has very limited oil reserves, and they would be one of the few sources of reconstruction funds in the post-war period. The Syrian government seems to realize they need to at least sort of control that oil, or preclude the US from stealing it outright.
The international legal process could take a long time, but with no American oil companies coming forward to extract Syria’s oil to begin with, the Assad government can likely afford to be patient, and comfortable that they’d almost certainly win this lawsuit, since the US has never even offered an attempted legal justification for taking the oil.
The small amounts of oil in Syria are not enough to fund the government or a rebuilding. However, without that oil Syria is drained of cash to buy oil elsewhere, and so it is even further behind. This is about wrecking Syria and keeping it wrecked. Nobody is going to get rich, there just isn’t enough oil for that.
They moved the coming Kurdistan a little to the right. The coming Kurdistan will have American and Israeli military presence, probably join NATO too! Nothing stops with these pigs. Ever.
What???!!! This won’t go well .. Russian, Iranian, and Hezbollah forces are already there .. so, how in hell will there ever be a Kurdistan with US/Israel military presence?? That would surely spark a 3rd World War. Are these pigs that suicidal??
There are places where those people peacefully coexist. The concept is not that radical.
Syria’s long term interest is confederation with Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan. One market, one negotiating team for world trade, one defense pact to keep Turkey, Iran and Russia out.
Confederation of the Semitic Home.
With Syrians dying every day . It would be much better if this oil problem could be handled quickly .
Syrians are good at dying, killing and letting foreigners run their lives. Not a thing can be done for them.
We have a long history of thievery.
If unpunished, it’xs quite legal. Use it or lose it.
Thievery backed by law is still thievery.
What a waste of time. We only follow international law when it fits our needs.
I international law is like a good fable; makes you feel better while reading it but doesnt keep the posts out. Defunct law is nuncio, as Cicero might say.
Nunc nunc.
International court? And who is going to enforce the outcome? Assad is told to do everything formal and knowing he has no chance in hell.
Well he also wants to avoid a life sentence from an international court. You gotta be restrained. Modest. Practical. Assad made the West look impotent. They are.
They might get a judgement in France, I doubt they can get any court in the USA to look at this, also maybe the British might look at it but that’s a long shot.
The UN has the ICJ which would be the proper Venue but how would anyone enforce a verdict from the UN?
Sadly, I think Assad will find that international courts work much like most capitalist courts, protecting the rich and ignoring the poor when they’re not devouring them whole. If international law was anything but a sick joke, George Bush would be painting shitty pictures of his jail cell in the Hague right now.
The real question is how that did all that precious American oil get under Iraqi … I mean … Syrian sand to begin with?
😉
Right, this administration ignores subpoenas from it’s own congress…good luck….
Hint: constitution of US died when WW2 magically pulled in US. Dead. Lawyers and judges are Punch and Judy.
I am sympathetic. The US intel community has had was drek deep in 2011 planned riots to oust Assad and install a pro West general who would make room for US gas to flow from Iraq. But courts are worthless for international disputes. Chief Justice Cinderella?
