At least three US troops were wounded with “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to officials, after they were shot by an Afghan police officer in an apparent insider attack in Kandahar Province.
The attacker, described only as a member of the Civil Order Police, was killed in return fire after the attack, and the US confirmed that all the NATO casualties were Americans.
Insider attacks have been a problem throughout the US war in Afghanistan, with desperation to grow Afghan security forces meaning there is little screening, and insurgents can easily infiltrate to get close to US troops.
The US tried to solve this a few years ago by cutting the amount of contact they have with Afghan forces, but an ongoing escalation has seen the US troops becoming more accessible, and insider attacks are again on the rise.
