The Trump Administration is about to disappoint a lot of people who see an easy path toward war with
Iran, by allowing reason to prevail on international waivers for civil
nuclear cooperation with Iran. The waivers will be renewed.
The waivers cover all five remaining parties of the P5+1 nuclear deal,
and gives America’s blessing on those nations continuing to cooperate
with Iran’s civilian program. Mike Pompeo and John Bolton both objected
to the waivers being renewed.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, however, noted that if the sanction
waivers weren’t renewed, and all those nations stayed in the treaty, the
US would be setting itself up to have to start imposing sanctions
against every permanent UN Security Council member, and Germany, and
target a bunch of companies who got involved in projects when the US was
still party to the deal.
Needless to say, that would be a big problem for the US, and Trump
ultimately decided not to chance it. At the same time, Pompeo and Bolton
both saw this as another big chance to worsen US ties with Iran,
continuing the two down a path to war that they’ve been long working
for.
If Yang or Gabbard get the democrat nomination I may vote for either of them over Trump . If Trump allows a shooting war against any country than even Bidden would get my vote over Trump .. Other wise I call myself a Trump supporter which I kinda think Ill be
Eric, et AL aficionados here, WHAT do you think aw.cm can/should do to fill Justins chair currently relegated to preserving Justin”s legacy & things PAST… What, who… how can this site regain it’s incredible ability to choose the right response, answers & posture to blunt the war party’s efforts at every turn, from killing future millions, poisoning their lands with uranium ammo in their cenconquering the world madness and enslave us ALL in this project and the trillions in confiscated taxes it requires to amply line all their infinity pockets…???? What this project needs to retain its unique relevance.
The problem is this site has never “blunted” anything the government wants to do and never will. We’re all preaching to the choir. It’s important to be on the right side of history and that’s about all we can do.
Nominating Biden will hand the victory to Trump. Biden excites no one on the left. Having said that, I’m sure the Dems will insure that Biden is their man.
Sorry to hear you’d be a Trump *supporter,* though.
Here are the relevant questions about Biden v. Trump:
1) Is Biden more popular — even a little more — than Hillary Clinton?
2) Would Biden and the DNC run a better — even a little better — campaign in 2020 than Clinton and the Clinton-controlled DNC ran in 2016?
The swing required to reverse the 2016 results is less than 100k votes out of ~130 million cast in a as few as 2 or three states (Florida and EITHER Pennsylvania OR Michigan OR Wisconsin; or all three of those last three).
That’s not to say that it’s IMPOSSIBLE for Trump to be re-elected. Just very, very, very, very difficult. He has nowhere to go but down (he won’t be able to top his 2016 enthusiasm/turnout numbers and will not win ANY states he didn’t win in 2016). The Democrats seemingly have nowhere to go but up, and they only have to go up a tiny bit.
Biden? Why?
Exactly what do these waivers cover? I’d bet it isn’t much, and will be sabotaged anyway.
In other words, what actually happened is that Trump wanted to worsen relations with Iran, but couldn’t afford to piss off the EU any more than he has if he wants them to send ships to enable him to blockade Iran in furtherance of his own bad goals against Iran.
How is that actually a win in any sense of the word? Maybe he didn’t do what Bolton wanted him to do, but his own motivations are hardly peace-making. So he gets zero credit for this from me.
It’s a win because it again reveals Trump has motivations that are not WAR-making, even if they don’t extend to formenting peace-making. He tempers his moves with realism and with respecting logistical complications, unlike the all-stops-out ratchet-up to war approach of Pompeo and Bolton. Ask yourself when those two gentlemen have ever been talked out of proceeding into further escalation or belligerence, compared to Trump? The fact that he can be frequently persuaded to curb the march to more militarism (or even, in this case, more sanctions) is positive, and deserves partial credit.
Well, just because today he’s not as bad as the worst elements in his staff/cabinet (which he of course appointed, himself,) doesn’t mean that he’s not totally useless as an antiwar president. It just means that today, Mnuchin managed to keep Trump’s attention for long enough to convince him he was going down the (for Mnuchin) wrong path. Of course, this action doesn’t jive with his administration’s normal tendency to thumb their noses at the Europeans.
There might be some hope for Trump, looks like he dropped a couple of pounds, he might try to do a few squat jumps on a regular basis and regain a little strength in his legs. Pompeo just might be a lost cause, his appetite totally out of control.
I believe Trump had a hand in imposing those sanctions in the first place. He’s now playing good cop AND bad cop.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, however, noted that if the sanction waivers weren’t renewed, and all those nations stayed in the treaty, the US would be setting itself up to have to start imposing sanctions against every permanent UN Security Council member, and Germany, and target a bunch of companies who got involved in projects when the US was still party to the deal.
The arrogance of such imperial officials knows no bounds. These nations if they weren’t such grovelers would call such impudent statements out and threaten to counter sanction not just the USA but Mnuchin himself
