Efforts to secure safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz, an
economically vital but narrow waterway, are being discussed by top Omani
and Iranian officials, according to Omani FM Yousef bin Alawi bin Abdullah.
The foreign minister added that all nations need to “maintain contact to
avoid more incidents.” Iran also talked up the importance of safety in
the region, warning Britain that Iran won’t accept violations of regulations.
Amid a flurry of concern about Iran seizing a British tanker, in
response for Britain seizing an Iranian tanker, Iran has promised to
ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Though Western nations hostile toward Iran clearly won’t take Iran’s
word for it, the inclusion of Oman in cooperation may be key, as Oman is
broadly on good terms across the region.
