Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement preemptively warning
Iran against following through on a plan to launch rockets into space,
saying that they are required to cease all nuclear-related activities and that the US will not allow them to put international security at risk.
Pompeo further accused Iran of being in defiant of UN Security Council
Resolution 2231 related to missiles capable of delivering nuclear
weapons, saying that Iran must not launch any rockets into space as a
result.
Iranian officials dismissed these allegations, saying that no UN resolution prohibits them
from sending vehicles into space. This is not the first time this has
been a subject of dispute between the US and Iran on the UNSC 2231.
UNSC 2231 forbids Iran from developing nuclear-capable ballistic
missiles. The US has long argued that this amounts to a ban on any
ballistic missiles, irrespective of cargo, while Iran says that since
they are confirmed by the UN’s IAEA to not have any nuclear weapons, it
doesn’t really apply to defensive ballistic missiles.
Furthermore, the US has argued that ban can be extrapolated to include
pretty much anything missile related, as well as launching rockets into
space. Pompeo noted the US considers space-bound rockets virtually
identical to ballistic missiles. Clearly, this was never the intention
of the UNSC resolution, and Iran never considered it a permanent UN ban
on them exploiting space.
Pompeo the Pompous. Nuff said….
The Iranian FM response to this is pretty funny: you can’t use a part of the UN resolution that you have broken yourself to call attention to us breaking a disputed section of it. It’s like stopping paying rent and still expecting the landlord to fix the plumbing! But is this idiocy pointed out by the MSM?
Getting into space is way easier than a non-destructive re-entry, required to deliver weapons. Pompeo is a deluded religious zealot.
I am certain Iran will present Pompeo with the index finger pointed vertically to denote to the idiot that if they are going to launch a rocket into space any time they want.
So am I, Masdar .. Iran will not only present Pompous Pompeo with the index finger pointed vertically to denote to the loon that if they’re going to launch a rocket into space any time they want, they’ll laugh at him while they do it. ;D
“UNSC 2231 forbids Iran from developing nuclear-capable ballistic
missiles”
Often made copy-paste from inferior media, but didn’t expect to see it appear here of all places.
This is a full text quote from the original 2231:
“Iran is called upon not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology…” Annex B – 3
The term “called upon” is legally non-binding way to term the agreement. Then we could go on about the term “designed to” replacing the term in the older expired resolution “capable of”. Or just the whole context of this resolution removing the restrictions of UNSC 1929 on ballistic missiles.
Google ‘hubris’.
What gives the most militarily aggressive nation on the planet the right to tell anyone what they can and can’t do?
Doing Israels wet work!
