Officials familiar with the situation say that the US is eager to increase its arms supplies to Ukraine, expanding on the first supply of lethal arms back in April. This is intended to be done to support further moves against the eastern rebels.
Congress has been generally supportive of escalating the lethal aid. This is because Ukraine has been hyping the military aid received as eventually about fighting Russia, and that seems to be able to secure endless Congressional funding for most anything military-related.
Worryingly, the new round of aid is expected to include not just anti-tank missiles and other relatively short range arms, but things like anti-aircraft weapons and naval weaponry. Ukraine, and US military analysts, are arguing this would be more impactful.
Which is true, but also is potentially dangerous, as Ukraine’s government has made no bones about envisioning their nation being the start of World War 3 against Russia, and the US providing arms that are liable to be used against Russian military targets would be risky indeed.
You’d think the Republicans, being in the majority and being the pro-Russia party(right?), would not allow this. Isn’t it the democrats and liberals who want war with Russia?
They are the same party, its called the a-hole party.
you are right of all the republicans polled about 75 % wanted friendly relations with Russia Maybe even the majority of the democrat voters would rather not have so many problems with Russia too . But the established elected politicians and the Pentagon have been telling us for almost thirty years . Russia used to be a communist country so we have to cause as many problems as we can for Russia
The Russians have repeatedly demonstrated that they have learned not to just take it when the US is aggressive. If they see this as important, they are very likely to react in ways to overwhelm it, as they did in Georgia and Syria.
The West is ultimately not willing to have a major war over Ukraine. It wants to take as much or as little of war there as is convenient at a given moment, and remain in control of the escalation. However, the West does not have “escalation dominance.” Russia does.
Keep poking at this, and it is likely to kill Ukraine, not Putin’s power.
I thought Trump was going to deescalate the conflict
When will Russia start sending arms to close allies of the USA? How can they USA possibly justify this interference, as it continues to arm Nazi thugs who assassinate leaders of the “breakaway” regions from the illegal, US-supported Poroshenko regime failed state?
Trump has to cut the pathetic tiny refugee funding for Palestinians, but never the money for violent murderous actions by criminal regimes anywhere it can find them.
As is the case elsewhere, there can be no military solution to this situation. But the US, as can be expected, goes the military route because that’s where the money is.
It would be far better to support the Minsk II agreement of 2015 which called for a democratic solution. This would require the US to lean on its puppet Nazi government in Kiev to give the ethnic Russian-populated area some sovereignty, similar to the situations in many other countries, especially in Europe. It would be no big deal. It’s just a small part of Ukraine. Here’s a list of world autonomous areas arranged by country.
