Negotiations between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded with a joint press conference. The comments by the two revealed, as expected, no major deals were reached, but that some fairly vague plans for improved cooperation were agreed upon.
There were disagreements, with President Putin faulting Trump for the withdrawal from the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran, and urging Trump to be more decisive in pushing Ukraine toward peace talks with its eastern rebels.
President Trump brought up the issue of election interference, and accepted Putin’s denial. He praised Putin as a strong leader and competitor. He also defended his decision to attend the summit despite calls by US lawmakers to cancel it.
The conference ended with increasingly confrontational media questions about election meddling, with Trump reiterating that while he has faith in the FBI for investigations, he sees no reason not to believe Putin’s denial.
With so much bipartisan Congressional opposition to even attending the summit, unsurprisingly the summit’s end was met by furious condemnations from both sides of the aisle. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called the talks the “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.”
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) went even farther, not only faulting Trump for his weakness at the summit, but declaring that weakness to be “proof” that Russia has something on him and is threatening to release it.
This is what Trump wants for the mid-terms. He knows that the only thing Middle America hates more than congress is the media. By pissing on the media and inviting them to bring it on he is inviting his favorite foes to make total asses of themselves like they did in 2016. The media can’t help themselves, they love to hate Trump as much as he loves to hate them. It’s good for ratings. It’s a marriage made in hell.
And to think this blowhard criticized Obama for apologizing to the world after the Bush years ,saying Obama made America weak than, turns around and goes to Helsinki and bows down to Putin in front of the whole world. Hahaha….What a moron .Some people need to practice what they preach.
Could go either way. Trump may have bungled this to a degree that the reaction opposing him will mean worse sanctions toward Russia. He needed to make a stronger case and because he hasn’t fed the media with raw meat by doing so, they and opposition are going to fill the vacuum.
I watched the press conference, I thought they were both terrific. Trump’s performance was great. It’s a total success! Everyone should be happy. OOOPS, sorry the neocon-liberal deformed Deep-State entity is so POed.
Yes it was a success for what president Trump wants but not for the reasons you present. In Helsinki the Washington-London axis was thrown under the bus and was deliberately replaced by a Washington-Moscow axis. London will only be allowed to play second fiddle. Or no fiddle at all. Keep in mind that axes have a tendency of breaking.
Good for Trump, let’s hope he actually does push for better relations. I have to say, it took some guts for him to even try.
The problem is all he did was talk about his problems with Mueller.
Good on Putin for bringing up the JCPOA. Typical McCain and Pelosi. I can only imagine how Rachel Maddow must be frothing at the mouth right now.
Ron Paul says Trump won the summit.
Anyone who is truly “Antiwar”
would have to agree.
https://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/07/16/ron-paul-trump-won-in-summit-with-putin-neocons-arent-very-happy/
If Trump “won” the summit, who “lost” the summit? Putin? If so, I don’t see how. Maybe people should get out of the habit of seeing every encounter between nations as a question of “winning” and “losing.” If you mean he has “won” in a policy fight with the neocons (who presumably “lost”), this is just one skirmish. The “deep state” has already set the tone for the next skirmish with the “Russiagate collusion” indictments, which conveniently will never reach a courtroom. Their next possible move might be to press the money laundering allegations, involving Russian gangsters. The indictments set a public mood for using the latter for impeachment, because the latter provides apparent motivation for the former. Remember, impeachment is not a real trial: it is a quasi-judicial public spectacle which has more to do with the audience than it does the gravity or reality of the charges.
I don’t think Ron Paul meant Trump won and Putin lost. He said Trump “won on this” meaning the summit was a win. Ron Paul is one of the few that doesn’t play that silly game where there has to be a winner or loser.
People who want productive dialogue with Russia “won”;
the globalist-deep state-MIC establishment “lost”.
Hey, I wanna get along with Russia, could I have $100,ooo,000 to go to Helsinki, taxpayers ? Actually, I’ll do it for $5000
Hahaha. ..I feel sorry for the American farmers that voted for him. The strategic targeted sanctions China imposed on them, coupled with the immigration debacle is hurting them. No one to buy there products and no one to pick them once there ready. Make America Great Again ….Hahaha. …
What T.rump needs to do is go to Congress and have them declare war on Ru.ssia. If they says no. Then during his next State of Union he need to tell them to drink their Shut up Juice.
They will gladly send Deplorable children to war against Russia. 100% bipartisan support for that!
You are sadly mistaken if you believe the next World War will involve troops.
Interesting how shared intelligence thwarted a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg.
It is official Putin is the most power man on the planet.
I hope you are right.
“HELSINKI (Reuters) – The United States and Russia will work together to ensure Israel’s security, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
That’s the real scam that Ditz failed to report!!!
Zionism is the crime of the century!!!

Why can’t this billionaire be president?
McCain still has a brain left??
No, he is dead. War is in his death-rattle.
Can’t wait for McCain to get his just desserts.
I can’t help but to laugh my ass off at this spectacle .I’m sorry antiwar Zombies but, this was a farce,a boat and pony show. Trump isn’t accomplishing anything in these meetings except ,isolating America from its traditional allies and ,giving Kin Jon Un and Putin influence on the world stage. He’s helping deliver for Russia in the form of giving them what they want. A divided European Union and a weakened NATO is exactly what Russias been dreaming of for years .It won’t last Trumps ego is so big he won’t be able to handle how he’s being portrayed in the media around the free world and, at home and ,by the people in his own party that usually swallow all the dumb shiii he does daily. He embarrassed and disgraced himself yesterday but, watch how fast all that changes. In the meantime America’s massive nuclear build up continues. Antiwar zombies haven’t y’all learned by now ,Trump is a conman that will tell you he wants peace while, his military complex builds a bomb just for the Russians. Such a simple bunch you people on Antiwar are SMH….
Putin and Kim already had influence on the world stage.
Globally, the question is whether the US acknowledges that influence and acts accordingly, or continues in the delusion that the collapse of the Soviet Union means it is destined to forever remain “the world’s only remaining superpower.”
Domestically, the question is whether the US continues its post-WW2 policy of making the federal government’s primary responsibility the transfer of wealth from the pockets of the productive class to the bank accounts of the military industrial complex, or whether it tries something else.*
Is Trump aware that these are in fact the questions on which everything else turns? I don’t know. From outside of his own mind, he appears to operate primarily on an instinct for self-aggrandizement, but perhaps those who think he’s playing 4D chess or whatever are right.
Any crack in NATO, up to a complete crack UP, is good for America. It should have been dissolved when the Warsaw Pact fell apart. Failing that, it should at least have kept its promise not to expand eastward and put itself right on Russia’s borders. At present, its only real function is to keep a series of shitty little wars going so that the money keeps flowing to “defense” contractors, at the risk that a shitty little war might turn into a shitty big war that could kill off a significant portion of the world’s population. It’s useless to anyone who values peace, freedom, or global economic prosperity.
I don’t like Trump and didn’t vote for him, but I support anything he does that improves American foreign policy, even by happenstance, for the same reason that I didn’t vote for him — that is, because I don’t hate America.
* Of course, anything the state does will involve transferring wealth from the productive class to the political class. But a different and less war-oriented political class would be a worthy gain.
I appreciate your perspective Mr.Knapp.
NATO is certainly of no use in keeping peace-just the opposite.
I don’t believe the destruction of NATO accomplishes long term goals. The policies must change. If NATO were a regional entity to provide a federated, economical defensive army, like we would wish the US army to be, it would be efficient, and foster cooperation in arms (which can foster peace) Until voluntary human disarmament is seriously pursued, these entities will be, unfortunately, necessary.
“4d chess or whatever ” I was thinking about trump today, after his reversal on the dang Russia thang. Obviously ordered by the GOP. He has done, signed, everything the GOP has told him to, yet, if circumstances were different, he would have run as a democrat, and done everything THEY told him to. If he won, the Supreme Court would be the opposite of what it is going to be. I’m saying, there is no there, there. The main problem with trump, is he is the GOP rubber stamp.
Sam, the antiwar community is not in lockstep with JR, he just has his picture on top.
from Joe Lauria over at Consortium news, “The indictments, which are only unproven accusations, formally accused 12 members of the GRU, Russian military intelligence, of stealing Democratic Party emails in a hacking operation and giving the materials to WikiLeaks to publish in order to damage the candidacy of Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton.”
hell I have no problem with anyone stealing the Demo emails and giving them to WIki, if that’s what happened but I don’t think that was what actually did. more like some dissident put them on a thumbnail and handed them off to Wiki or someome for Wiki..
In any case I am glad we got to see all those Podesta emails etc, they were just what we needed to know about the Dems rigging the primaries against Sanders etc….
I hope this summit has very beneficent results that leads us more towards world stability and peaceful co-existence than towards nuclear war and the end of the world
So Trump talks to Putin for a couple hours at the same time a modernized nuclear weapon is being built to bomb the Russians and y’all think something was accomplished? Hahaha. ..I love Trump supporters he can take them to Alaska and tell them it’s Miami and they’ll put on there bathing suits and go swim ,so hilarious. If you think Podestas emails are bad just wait until the Russians get pissed at Trump, let’s see if you’ll be singing the same tune when he’s exposed. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander….
Seems positive, but short on specifics.
Never thought I’d see the day when AntiWar would side with an ultra right wing murderous dictator & his US Orange wannabe.
In order to fix the system we must kill the system.
That wasn’t just a shark they jumped but a whole school.
“Never thought I’d see the day when AntiWar would side with an ultra right wing murderous dictator & his US Orange wannabe.”
And you haven’t seen such a day.
Mainlining the “past-its-sell-by-date” anti-Commie Kool-Aid, and then topping that with full-blown TDS results in reality-disconnected ideological hysteria. When Trump becomes the greatest President of the modern age, and Makes America Great Again, I hope you are spared any dangerous depressive event from the emotional whipsaw of disappointment.
Putin made Trump look like the inept, erratic blowhard clown that he is. Then the clown comes back and tries to correct his blunder by saying, he should have said these words and not this word. He made himself look like a moron. And to suggest that Russia should send over its own investigators to work with Muellers team investigating Russian meddling is the height of lunacy and laughable as the Justice departmement stated. It only shows that Trump has no grasp of political acumen or political or diplomatic parlance in performing on the world stage at all. He doesn’t take advice and does not even study or prepare for anything because as he puts it, he is a “stable genius”. He is a egotistical braggart, full of pride and makes everything all about him. Throw this CLOWN out of office.
Hopefully, six more years of Trump executing brilliantly and effectively while speaking clumsily will help you get over your TDS.
It seems unlikely that Americans will put up with six more years of his tax hikes and his war on the American economy.
We shall see.
