As had been reported earlier in the week, the US imposed a new round of sanctions against Russians today, targeting a number of “oligarchs” accused of supporting the Russian government. Some accused them of being Putin’s “inner circle.”
Russian officials say that rather than targeting a handful of people, they see the sanctions “aimed at the Russian people,” adding that it was a “new blow to Russo-American relations.” It’s just the latest in a long line of such blows over the past couple of years.
Russian officials have promised a “tough response” against the sanctions. This is likely to mean retaliatory sanctions against the US, much as US expulsion of Russian diplomats a couple of weeks ago led to an identical expulsion of American diplomats.
All of these measures have raised fears of a new Cold War, and indeed some officials have warned the situation is actually in some ways worse than the previous Cold War. The biggest problem is that no one seems to be engaging in talks to keep the situation from worsening, and new measures making the situation worse keep coming with alarming regularity.

I based my opinion on the fact that Assad was in a favorable position in the last two alleged gas attacks and the timing doesn’t make any sense. At the end of March of 2017 we had stated that removing Assad was no longer a US priority and lo and behold one week later Assad supposedly carries out a gas attack. This time Trump says he wants to pull out of Syria and again for some odd reason Assad decides to cut his own throat one week later and does another gas attack. So, no, I don’t need RT telling me anything. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out Assad had absolutely nothing to gain and EVERYTHING to lose by carrying out any gas attacks. But now it seems that “oligarchs” encompass anyone who owns a large business, or even those that are heads of corporations. Like Lukoil’s Alexei Miller. And even well respected envoys, heads of variuos councils, including those that contributed a great deal to promoting American-Russian relations, including facilitation of American business opportunities on Russian market, such as Konstantin Kosacev. This list is Trotskyites dream come true, as it will anger ordinary Russians, with an ardent hope that Russia will get “agressive”. It is already too agressive by just being alive. It looks like Pompeo in State is giving Trotskyites all they want. Trump may want to get out of Syria, or try to save us from a dangerous new classes of weapons. But Trotskyites, feeling the time is agaiinst them, want chaos — led by Trotskyite Boris Johnson — chaos amplified. What they want is to push Russia in Syria, may be organize a chemical 9/11, and gamble that Russia will be forced to back down. But the theory already backfired, after Turkey made it clear that US cannot build another nation in the Middle East. Russia did not have to be exposed. Any attempt to linger in Iraqi border — under JSIS pretext is going to bring IRAQ in, already poised to cross the border into Syria and clean up ISIS. What then — fight against Ieaq? If US could not stop Turkey, it has less chance to stop Russia. The idea that the West is so powerful to make other countries shun Russia — is backfiring. At a recent security conference in Moscow attended by dozens of Ministers of Defence, the new Chinese head of military announced in the press conference: “We came to show Americans the high kevel of cooperation between Chinese and Russian militaries.” Kind of blunt, and clear.
