President Trump continues to take to Twitter to angrily rail against the notion of diplomacy towards North Korea, insisting over the weekend that North Korea had been “making fools” of the US in any talks in the past. Trump concluded this screed with the declaration that “only one thing will work.”
While the implication is clearly meant to be something along the lines of a calamitous nuclear war, Trump appeared much more interested in elaborating on what in his opinion hasn’t worked than offering any specifics on what the “one thing” is.
Reporters even specifically asked Trump over the weekend about what the “one thing” was, to which Trump would only ominously say “you’ll figure that out pretty soon.” Again, since all his other talking points on North Korea have been about how ready the US is for war with them, it’s a concerning direction he’s pointing in.
White House officials were no more helpful, insisting only that “all options are on the table”. This is a common statement for them, but one that has less and less meaning with a president who has already ruled out all the non-war options.
Analysts have repeatedly warned that a war with North Korea would kill millions if it goes nuclear, and that there is no such thing as a limited war with North Korea, meaning the worst case is palpably realistic.
If it´s a nuclear attack, we´ll get nuclear winter and you can´t grow anything in the USA. It can´t get more moronic than that.
Not necessarily. It depends how many nukes get lit off and how many megatons each is. Of course there are very legit concerns about if a limited nuclear war is realistic. Every nuclear bomb that explodes above-ground increases cancer rates worldwide, though. In that sense any nuclear exchange is certain to kill Americans.
Your cold matter of fact comment sounds like the ones used by the USA when it was the first “nation” to nuke anyone. Don’t let this become normal discussion as if it did not much matter except that some Americans might be killed.
I share your disgust with the accepted givens in this debate, but I also accept that many Americans, particularly officials responsible for the relevant decisions, consider it their duty to consider Americans first, anyone else little if at all. I believe we have to meet our philosophical opponents where they are, as gross as that is. I don’t have any better ideas, but would be interested if you do.
10 times the very small Hiroshima bomb produces nuclear winter. And making more and more nuclear weapons. For what? Committing suicide 1500 times more or less? It´s more insane than insane. Bloody fools!
“all options are on the table”. This stupid and sickening statement NEVER includes negotiations. Trump in his bellicose persistence is showing that for all its “defense” spending, the USA cannot defend itself from a small, determined distant country which will not submit to its threats.
