Officials familiar with the situation say that President Trump is intending to “decertify” the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran ahead of the October 15 deadline. With no evidence Iran is violating the deal in any way, he is going to instead claim it is just “not in the national interest of the United States” to honor the deal’s terms.
This has much the same effect as falsely claiming Iran to be in violation, as it would put the nuclear deal up for a vote in Congress. Though Congress has long expressed opposition to the deal, it’s likely to be controversial to cancel it years after its implementation for literally no reason.
President Trump is to give a speech surrounding the matter, expected next Thursday, and will lay out a broad strategy of confronting Iran, trying to blame them for all Middle East instability and terrorism. This would both be aimed at justifying the decertification, and setting the stage for another flurry of sanctions and threats to attack Iran.
Officials say that President Trump won’t explicitly urge Congress to abrogate the deal, but will try to use the threat of doing so as leverage to force more onerous terms on Iran. Iran and other parties to the deal have ruled out renegotiating it, noting how difficult it was to get everything agreed to by everyone in the first place.
If the US does withdraw from the deal, however, it doesn’t necessarily mean the deal will be dead. It is entirely possible that the rest of the P5+1 nations and Iran will continue to leave the deal in place without the US.
That’s been a concern since Trump first started campaigning on withdrawing from the deal. In withdrawing, the US loses a seat at the table for managing the deal, and risks isolating itself diplomatically. That the measure is being taken without a specific reason is going to add to the damage it does to the ability of the US to negotiate deals in general, with the expectation that anything the US agrees to could quickly be dishonored on a president’s whim.
And despite Trump’s vow to make the deal “better,” it’s not clear there is anything the rest of the world could conceivably offer that would satisfy him, given his problems with the deal are mostly that it involves Iran. This too suggests there will be no serious consideration of “revising” the deal.
Why do my comments disappear after minutes…. Which deprives me of the opportunity to correct dates, spelling and or bad information.. What good is the edid button/function if the comment is gone… I find my comments gone for hours/days so their impact and relevance are grossly diminished!!!!!!
Why don’t comments stay visible unless they are deemed inappropriate or posted by flagrant offenders of the rules.. Why give our intellectual work such shoddy, “guilty till proven innocent” treatment for no good or articulated reason? Are you trying to have an intelligent discussion or an airtight politically correct dialogue… It seems your editorial dark side grows bolder with every passing day, especially since JR went into provincial exile… A little more boldness please. And a little more trust, with your political correctness sensitivity turned down to and every day American level of concern.. Thanks!
So far as In can tell from looking, or recall personally, none of your comments have “disappeared” recently, let alone “after minutes.” My “editorial dark side” has nothing to do with whatever you seem to think is happening.
Yeah right. The guy is just lying.
The default at the top of this comments list is to sort by ‘best’. Thus a refresh will put the comments that have gotten ‘likes’ up above yours. You can change this just below the Login prompt and above the field for typing a new comment. I suspect that if you put in on ‘Latest’ you’d see your comments show back up in the order you expect. Otherwise, new comments get buried at the end of a long list and no one is likely to see them and ‘like’ them to get them promoted above the ‘best’ comments.
I kinda prefer that the default be set to ‘latest’, but I’m always strange and the minority in such matters.
“….with the expectation that anything the US agrees to could quickly be dishonored on a president’s whim….”
the Russians have learned the that lesson both in the middle east
the US is no longer a ‘reliable partner’, as they say. And that makes for a more precarious world as other countries can’t believe in much of what the US proposes or agrees to today which could be abrogated to down graded or changed the day after tomorrow.. All just for the better of the world if you ask me, leading to greater US isolation
The hypocrisy of labeling Iran a terrorist promoting nation defies logic. The only country in the world that believes this is the USA due to the daily bombardment of anti-Iran propaganda, while MSM ignores Saudi activities.
The USA is quickly moving into a third world dictatorial environment where facts are not allowed in public news coverage.
There is a colossal problem with disinformation coming from the major networks and their controlling interests.
false facts are the new abnormal norm…omg that makes sense,,,,
Note that there is little supporting ‘evidence’ ever given with this claim.
If any is given, its usually that Iran supports Hamas and Hezbollah which are more like popular local governments and political parties who’s main crime is that they oppose Israel and thus are considered ‘terrorists’ in the Israeli puppet state. Or they go back to the Reagan days and claim that Iran backed the group that bombed the Marine barracks that was foolishly placed in a war zone with the Marines taking the pro-Israeli side in that war.
But there’s nothing like the Saudi/Gulf-State backed Al-Qaeda or ISIS terrorists that have been terrifying the world of late. Iran is the country that’s fighting and opposing that.
Then Netanyahu will restart his weekly threats to bomb Iran to prevent it from getting a nuclear arsenal when he agreement expires.
The idiocy of this step is that it has almost certainly killed any renewal of the agreement in the future.
With regards to sanctions. The goods which Iran needs are produced in every one of the remaining partner states. Sanctions on banking may well result in economic and financial wars. Moreover, bypasses will be found.
moron
That’s moron in chief.
Just remember that by now the ‘moron’ you refer to is not really in power, and has instead been usurped by the same deep state and military machine that so badly wanted Hillary in the White House to begin with.
He was saying the same s**t during the campaign. He even bragged about being the most militaristic candidate. He was, and is, exactly what the deep state wanted.
Rex is that you?
Let me assume for a moment that Iran is the baddie which Trump tells me it is. Then it is in the interest of our nation to prevent Iran from producing enough bomb-grade U235 for even a single nuclear bomb or start a reactor which can produce bomb-grade plutonium if it decides to do so. Since the 5+1 nuclear agreement has been and is still preventing that it is in our national interest to stay in the agreement. Getting out is therefore against our national interest. In fact it throws our national interest into the laps of Russia, China, France, Germany, and Great Britain. Would you believe it? Let other nations decide what is in our national interest? Justin has a nice expression for that.
Regime change by getting out of the agreement is a chimera. It is not going to happen.
Mr. President, is being logical a dangerous mental disease?
And then they complain that North Korea won’t bow to their demands and ‘negotiate’ a deal to give up their missiles and nukes. While the news headlines show that the US has no intention of honoring the deal that it just made with Iran. North Korea would have to be even dumber than Americans to negotiate with Great White Chief in Washington who speaks with a forked tongue.
Yes, the Iran deal was tilted towards Iran. Why not? The US was insisting that Iran give up a nuclear program that every intelligence agency agreed that they never had in the first place. So, why not see what those American fools will give to get Iran to give up something that they never had? To me, that’s just filed under America being stupid, knowing nothing about the rest of the world, and America believing America’s own propaganda to the point of foolishness.
But by now, its probably well worth it to the US to accept and honor the Iran deal if only to give a sign to North Korea that negotiating with America might be worth the paper a deal is written on.
Let the USA withdraw, as it did from the Paris agreement on climate change. It never cares about anyone else or its own people who are not rich anyway. If only we could get the USA out of any of the “deals” it insists on bullying others into as well. It still has not finished the Korean War while threatening (as always) the North Koreans and having no interest in the fate of the “ally” South Korea.
l
Netanyaho demands it. What’s the point of making a deal with the orange idiot.
Secretary Mattis has publicly stated that he thinks that it is in the US national interest to certify the Iran agreement on October 15. He must resign if the President decertifies the agreement because how can he stay in an administration which in his views acts against the national interest?
