According to UN diplomats familiar with the situation, Western nations are quietly pressing Saudi Arabia on the war in Yemen, which has now spanned nine months despite officials initially expecting a quick, sweeping victory. With that looking increasingly unlikely, the Saudis are under pressure to make a deal.
With UN-brokered peace talks to begin next week, the pro-Saudi side is making some suggestions that a settlement is possible, though they are still insisting it has to come with a virtually complete surrender of the Shi’ite Houthis.
A pre-war UN Security Council resolution endorsing the return of President Hadi seems to be what they’re basing this expectation on, though with a UN Security Council meeting on Yemen scheduled for December 22, the West is really hoping to have some progress to show off by then.
While details on what’s expected are scant, Western diplomats are reportedly trying to get the Saudis to accept the Houthis having at least some role in the new government. The Saudis have previously suggested they wouldn’t negotiate that point until after the Houthis surrendered completely, which the Houthis have interpreted, likely correctly, as a “no.”
Most people have a gun in Yemen, most in full support of their beloved Houthi government and this begs the question, does wealth make people stupid?
Your comment is very confusing. Who is wealthy and who is stupid?
As for Yemen, there never was one Yemen, the one hastily put together after Cold War. What was North Yemen is really just Yemen. The people there are Zaidi, not Houthis — as people do not get the name by their leader or just one tribe. Zaidi have been Shia since the split, and they fled into the mountains of Yemen, where they had ONE dynasty rule until 1950s, when with Saudi meddling an army coup resulted in the removal of the last Imam. Since, Saudi Arabia never stopped abusing Shia population, always tried through the control of central government in Sana'a to control the rest of the country. It never worked, as it was not possible. The tribes, which in fact were just various local governments, could not be brought under control of Sunni rule. Thus they remained armed at all the times. When I worked in Yemen in seventies, the atrocities against Shia population were at times so odious, as they will bring fighters to the public square for execution, every day at noon, South is Hadramawth, and should be let go — they have always been Sunni emirates and sultanates. And will be happy to go back to their life. They do not want each other's land, they do not have claims against each other — and we have backed up Saudi Arabia in trying to keep the fake country together, just so that they will have Sunni ruler. Hadi is a southerner, and let him go to South and sort out if they want him — what I doubt. But let north go back to its own people, and we need to stop allowing Saudi Arabia to carry its hatred for Shia to such an extent. Iran did not bring those people — they have lived there for thousands of years.
LOL, so the west (meaning the criminal regime of DC) are now pushing the Saudis to make a deal after they have been actively helping them slaughter the people of Yemen. Nice of these war criminals.
