In the last day of the now-expired ceasefire in Yemen, major clashes broke out in both the south and central of the country, as Houthi forces fought with Sunni militias.
At least 62 people were reported killed over numerous cities and provinces, with 23 of them said to be civilians.
Though the reports claimed the Sunni militias were loyal to former President Hadi, who resigned in January, it is unclear if that is the case.
With fighting centering on Bayda and Shabwa, the militias are almost certainly some of the same militias that fought against the Hadi government and backed al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). They are naturally against the Shi’ite Houthis, but their support for Hadi is likely to be very much in doubt, especially in the long run.
