Palestinian officials announced today that they have submitted a resolution to the UN Security Council, by way of Jordan, seeking to end the Israeli occupation of the West Bank.
The resolution has been talked about for weeks, with Israel heavily lobbying for a US veto, and reports that Secretary of State John Kerry has already told the Palestinians that such a veto is coming.
That isn’t the end of it, however, as Palestine has the backing of the European Union on the matter, and France is leading a diplomatic effort to forward an alternative, watered-down version that will be more difficult for the US to veto outright.
The Palestinian version seeks an Israeli withdrawal within two years, while the French version only pushes for a resumption of peace talks within that time. The Israeli government has expressed equal measures of outrage at both versions.
Next step is for EU to start the process of a total embargo against Israel, but when it comes to USG, well the Palestinian have no hope for any USGscary approach when it comes to Israel.
Viva Palestine Libre!
This is a riot… How many more fake starts will we have to enjoy in our lifetime.
Israel is outraged with the French proposal that will mandate resumption of peace talks in few years or so? What an outrage. After deals with Arafat at Camp David, and who now remembers Oslo?
This time, it is "good" European Union vs. "bad" US — come on, we have seen this Groundhog day too many times.
Yes, the whole thing is as simple as that: bullshit!
It cares little to America if the world despises her a bit more.
Israel should do more than just withdrawing from the West Bank which it will not do. It should also withdraw from Gaza and East Jerusalem. The peace talks between Arafat and Ehud Barak were a failure because Barak refused to give up East Jerusalem. The US media perpetuates the lie that Arafat was the cause of the failure of the peace talks.
The piece talks were a failure because both Barak AND Arafat refused to give up East Jerusalem. Both of them wanted it, neither would give on it.
