In a letter to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. Carl Levin (D – MI), Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey warned that establishing a no-fly zone would be an “act of war” and would cost an average of $1 billion a month to maintain.
And that’s just the low-end figure. Dempsey warned US planes could be shot down by Syria’s anti-aircraft systems and that would require US deployments into Syria to try to recover the pilots.
Even then, a no-fly zone might not have any serious impact on the civil war at any rate, since very little of the fighting actually involves aircraft, and the Syrian military relies overwhelmingly on ground forces to fight the rebels.
Dempsey’s letter was in response to the requests by Levin and Sen. John McCain (R – AZ) for details about possible military “options.” McCain was holding up Dempsey’s nomination for a second term as joint chiefs chairman pending a response.
What?? A general NOT wanting some war action??? Would cost Billions…?!? That's a drop in the pentagon bucket! Just wondering here but does this sound like McCain suspected Dempsey wasn't interventionist enough and maybe Dempsey felt isulted so he just said, to hell with this, I'll just tell them the truth, that it's a fool's policy to start another interventionist war for these douchebags?

You know, with all the evidence regarding getting involved in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, in the ME, one might come to the conclusion that this is not about "spreading Democracy" as they are wont to make one believe, but more about killing Muslims and destroying their countries – you know, like how they bombed Iraq "back into the Stone Age." It is becoming more and more difficult to call these involvements anything but what it is – ethnic cleansing on a grand scale. I used to believe that it was about the oil…I now think it is nothing more that something akin to what we did to the American Indians in our expansion.
Exactly. We need to stop listening to what they say, the excuses they give, the phony reasons, even the speculations about their reasons. All we have to do is look at the actual actions and behaviors. Extrapolating from there the motivations will more likely lead to truth than try to make the facts fit the rhetoric. Same with the NSA spying. Is it about "keeping America safe", or about…spying on everyone?
If we shoot down their jets are they wrong to shoot down ours? I do not think they would limit to war planes but just attack any plane owned by a USA corporation. Why would the Syrian fear any action when they are in a no fly zone and the imported thugs are being armed by the USA/Israel?old colonial powers.
Maybe it is time to pull out of the middle east. We are pumping more oil than ever but we export it. Maybe we should not allow our oil to be exported and put a tax on imported oil. Heaven knows nothing we do will get the oil companies to be anything but their normal thieves

It doesn't matter what Dempsey counsels. He's not calling the shots. Senior Pentagon officers are usually cautious about a new war because they've seen heads roll over Iraq and Afghanistan. But their underlings are anxious to make rank by bombing almost anyone. So if Dempsey isn't careful, he's end up with Admiral Fallon in the retirement ranks.
In other words, all he's doing here is CYA.
It's the military-industrial complex, the oil companies, and the banks calling the shots. They own and operate Obama. Therefore there WILL be a US attack on Syria probably by end of this year, including a new Israel invasion of Lebanon through Syrian territory. Once that is resolved, the US and Israel will then attack Iran. The whole point of the Syria crisis is to degrade the ability of Syria and Hizballah to be effective actors in an Iran war.
To that, you can add the news the Iran, Iraq and Syria are developing a pipeline to bring Iranian gas to the Mediterranean bypassing Turkey and Qatar and the Saudis. There's no way the US and Israel are going to allow this.
And this same military-industrial complex may very well plunge us into a nuclear holocaust with Russia by attempting this. Not much has panned out the way they hoped, so their attempt to bomb Syria and Iran may do us All in for good.
