Reports coming out of the Israeli media today say that Azerbaijan’s military, publicly on good terms with Israel, has been quietly considering the ways in which they might get involved in an Israeli attack on neighboring Iran.
Azerbaijan’s close military relationship with Israel has been a source of tensions with Iran, but they have insisted time and again that they won’t allow Azeri soil to be used as a launching pad for attacks on any of its neighbors.
At the same time, the military is readying its air bases for the possibility of hosting Israeli bombers, or at least allowing them to refuel, which would make Israel’s long range attack on Iran’s civilian nuclear program somewhat more convenient.
Such a decision could have potentially enormous ramifications for tiny Azerbaijan, however, as long after any Israeli-Iran war is over they would still have to deal with the consequences of siding against a large neighbor and important partner.
If Israel uses Azerbaijan to attack or help it attack Iran, one hopes that one of the few sane nations on this issue, namely Russia, will clobber the Azeris and expel the Israelis from Azerbaijan and also from Turkmenistan so that the world can get on with less conflict and a more positive future that is focused on peace and prosperity. The U.S. has squandered many opportunities in Central Asia in trying to destabilize the region and take possession of the valuable resources of Afghanistan and the Caspian region. If it doesn't stop Israel now, then let the Russians do it once and for all.
That will lead to WW3. Right now, anything and everything will lead to WW3.
Surely the Azeris understand that if they help Israel against Iran, when Iran retaliates the Israelis will be nowhere to be found. I wonder if the Israelis are telling them that the US will protect them. WOuldn't surprise me.

What I don't understand is that Azerbaijanis are apparently majority Shia, though Wikipedia claims the distinctions there aren't that sharp.

It's very funny, Azerbaijan less than 100 years ago was part of greater Iran (Persia) which lost to Russia.
It's name was Aran and shervan back then.and Azerbaijan was and is now name of 2 provinces in Iran.
even now there are many families separated by that invasion which every year visit each other.
Now so called Azerbaijan is acting against it's own motherland Iran!
