When talking about comments made by a Syrian rebel leader, confusion is inevitable. There are any number of Syrian rebel blocs, and each has a leader, and sometimes within those blocs there are several leaders vying for the role of actual leader, and others just styling themselves as leaders when they talk to Western media outlets.
Today’s rebel leader, an Islamic scholar named Abu Issa, claims to have “between six and seven thousand fighters” under his direct command and 1,500 in Aleppo, and insists his forces are “ready” for the major upcoming battle with Syrian troops.
His force is just one of several bracing for what some are already calling the “mother of all battles” in Aleppo, as Syrian troops look to dislodge the rebels from the nation’s largest and economically most important city.
Both sides have been throwing reinforcements at the city for a solid week, lining up on opposite sides with the belief that this battle will be a “decisive” one in the ongoing civil war. Both sides, of course, are predicting a huge victory, and claim to be at a major advantage.
For the Syrian Army their advantage is clear, advanced weapons, tanks, and air support. The rebels seem considerably more effective in recent weeks in urban combat, however, and maintain that their own determination for victory will be an insurmountable advantage over Assad’s forces.
Although the Asad regime is by no means one of the most 'humanitarian'; its overthrow will have disastrous consequences for the whole of ME. and will lead to endless sectarian wars end killings of innocent civilians, like we have seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.(Russia and China are well aware of that). It would play in the hands of the US/Israeli/NATO alliance who have always benefited from internal civil and sectarian wars. It's better to have a stable, albeit less 'democratic'/humanitarian regime than a western collaborating so called 'pseudo democratic' regime with just as bad – if not worse – criminal record as the old overthrown regime, as they now have propped up in Iraq and Afghanistan. What we are witnessing in the ME to-day is a East/West power struggle. Propaganda is an all important part of that struggle. Be aware of it.!!
I believe there are "reforms" in place. There have been 'elections', transition to privately owned press, economic reforms, among other things… Assad is proposing "presidential elections' in 2014. So what is the 'issue' and how and/or what is 'undemocratic' about what is proposed and on the table? Does anyone have a 'better idea' which will get to 'democracy' faster (that is: assuming 'democracy' is, in fact, the real 'issue' in the mind of the actual 'decision makers–which I assure you it is not)???
I even think that privately owned media (except personal or such of groups based on personalembership – like (real) NGOs or parties) has to be FORBIDDEN in any democracy.
It is not free media when journalists must fool and disinform readers or TV-viewers to serve the political aims a big corporation or a group of them. Democracy can only work with valid and relevnt information that serves the public interest.
So I am NOT HAPPY with the so-called "FREE PRESS" with in fact means the total opposite: its like a whore you can buy when you have the money.
Same with multiple parties ! I think that it has its advantage to have only one party – the different groups within a society are disscussing at one table to find a solution.
Alone if you have two or more – each party begins to lie about the other. The better liar or those with most money in the background will win – and this will bring the worst party on top.
Again a courage-making article headline of Antiwar. An optimist view of US unconventional warfare instead of showing the real terror for civilians and butchered who must act as human shields for these US sent killers terrorizing this target country of the large list of US wars.
Actually in my opinion fog to cover the real background:
In Syria, U.S. / NATO operates an undercover proxy guerrilla war, U.S. Army-speak: "Unconventional Warfare", which is conducted with sent-in jihadis, mercenaries and a few silly Muslim extremists who believed the AlJazeera's lies and false-flag Actions used to create hatred.
This U.S. war was planned long time ago and is just one of a long list:
1.USA war plans against Syria: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RC1Mepk_Sw
Specifically: Using a time window of ten or more years without Russian reaction, for war against former soviet "client states", eg Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Lebanon, Sudan, Iran (actually also the US-ignited Yugoslavian civi war in 1999 did belong to this list):

"
The intent of U.S. Unconventional Warfare efforts is to exploit a hostile power’s political, military, economic, and psychological vulnerabilities by developing and sustaining resistance forces to accomplish U.S.strategic objectives." or: "There is another type of warfare —new in its intensity, ancient in its origin— war by guerrillas, subversives, insurgents, assassins; war by ambush instead of by combat, by infiltration instead of aggression, seeking victory by eroding and exhausting the enemy instead of engaging him. It preys on unrest."

If you believe in what BBC and Al Jazira and other buoght news agency are saying, then the Syrian war is already finished and these “rebels” hand in hand with the Saudis Barbarians won it. Which would make Hillary Clinton a very happy women. But if you look at the reality then the story is diffrent then what they say. Let me put it like this, Aleppo have 2.5 million habitant, just think that only half of this amount is supporting the Syrian government (which I am sure they do) the number will change into 1,25 million which means that these barbarians need to kill many of these innocent people, which means if they win this bettel they are going to kill many after than being able to create a national government in Aleppo. The history of these barbarians is witnessed by the world in Libya, and they are still killing people there. Beside all that, what a hell these people think that they are capable or have and want to do beside being supported by a non democratic allience headed by US and EU falsified democracy wanting to change the course of Syrian people and their feature, unless these people are paid, bribed or threaten with their life, or they are simply an apportunist wanting to cash in if they could.., Like Ahmad Chalabi in Iraq.
Thus far they have succede milking Saudis and US tax payers, I don’t think that government of David Cameron have the money to pay these thugs but providing them with an office in London where the building belongs to Saudis kingdom, some weapons and perhaps a cooperation with Turkish government promising them that they will work hard in making sure that after this war Turkey would be a proud member of EU Union.
Why do you refer to this rebel leader as an "Islamist" in your headline? You call him an "Islamic scholar" in the article, and the original piece you link to calls him an "Islamic rebel leader". There is nothing in it to suggest he advocates a radical fundamentalist Islamic ideology, which the term Islamist confers.
