Saying that such a move was in the nation’s “national interest,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov threw his weight behind a proposal to provide NATO with an air base in Russian territory to use for the ongoing occupation of Afghanistan.
“We are helping the coalition,” Lavrov said, adding that he was opposed to any NATO deadlines to end the war, and believed that the war should continue as an effort toward “eradicating the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking in Afghanistan.”
The deal is far from finalized, but would see Russia giving NATO a base in the city of Ulyanovsk, potentially an opportunity for the occupation forces to replace the Manas base in Kyrgyzstan, which the Kyrgyz government has said it will convert to commercial use after the US lease expires in 2014.
It also gets Russia even more deeply involved in the Afghan War. Russia has been allowing NATO to ship certain supplies through its country to Afghanistan, and has suggested providing some more direct training aid to the conflict. Giving NATO a base inside Russia is an unprecedented move, however, and underscores just how interested the Russian government is in keeping the war going.
O.K. ——– but every day everything changes….. WTF is going on…..??? Someone must have a scorecard for this 1………. Victoria Nuland, your slip is showing….!!!!!
It is in Russia's interest to stop the flow of drugs from Afghanistan. Perhaps that is what is behind the move. Russia has every reason to be suspicious of American duplicity but by giving base they actually hold US hostage. So the move makes sense for everyone. The US is digging itself into a hole.
YOU GOT IT!…what happened to the USSR, will happen again… and curtail the flow of H
This is a very strange move for Russia – and quite disgusting.
It may make sense from Russia's point of view to keep the US bogged down in AfPak – but it is every bit as cynical as America's creation of Al Qaeda to bloody Russia's nose.
Those are real lives being lost in this Western crusade directed against Afghanistan. And Russia in the end will get blowback on this.
Letting your enemies spend themselves into obliteration. Do you really think that use of this base ain't gonna cost some (significant) cash? Tanstaafl.
DanD
well the russians aren't going to lease it for free, thats for sure.
Eyewitnesses have said that "unmarked Russian bombers based in Tajikistan have been flying missions against the Taliban." Also, Russian troops attired as Northern Alliance personnel have been fighting alonside coaltiton forces. So, this comes as no surprise. But at what point does the wortld say enough is enough? Haven't we brutalized the Afghans enough already? This war with all its side shows is an abomination, an atrocity that makes a joke of international law and convention.
Jujitsu Putin is back. "Magnanimously" offer your most dangerous enemy a small outpost on your own territory to help him bleeds himself out banging his head against one of your lesser problems on your border for you. Are our misleaders dumbed down enough with hubris to take the bait? My money's on yes.
NICE REPLY Lawrence, I rate yours No.1….!!!!
America is not Russia's enemy. Those who are behind the mass drug production and drug money-laundering are. This appears a reasonable move on the part of Russia, provided there is a strict control of the cargoes shipped. It is there that some real co-operation against the criminal narco-elite ma start.
America is behind the "mass drug production", as well as the transport of those drugs out of Afghanistan. Great way to make money for covert ops. you really thought this was about drugs?
>>>America is not Russia's enemy.
Friends don't surround you with military bases and rockets. Friends don't send their agents into your country to disrupt your government and sabotage your economy.
>>>Those who are behind the mass drug production and drug money-laundering are.
Right. The CIA and affiliates.
JEEEEZ…!!! ram_1986 ARE you a completely naive person…. Our Govts. are the "narco-elite…!!
A clear lapse of moral reasoning by the Russians.
If Google Maps is correct in its assessment of the location of Ulyanovsk, it's approximately 2,333.75 miles from Kabul, via the shortest land route.
Is it just me? I find those photo-ops of Hilliary Clinton kind of creepy. She just looks to over-thrilled with herself. Kind of creeps me out.
That's the mislabeled "reset button" from 2007 or so. I think it said "overcharge". Well, well..
