Members of the Obama Administration are confirming tonight that the National Security Council has been instructed to begin seeking options for US intervention in Syria, including what they call the “unlikely” option of setting up a no-fly zone.
The process is being led by NSC Director Steve Simon, and is said to involve top members of the State, Defense and Treasury Departments. The focus is on ways to “aid” the Syrian opposition.
Unspoken in all of this, of course, is exactly which segments of the Syrian opposition the administration are looking to aid, though it seems likely that the administration will use the time-honored tactic of principally aiding groups in favor of a large, long-term US presence in the nation.
Among the options considered are providing “humanitarian aid” to rebel forces and establishing a “safe zone” inside Syrian territory (presumably through military means) near the Turkish border, something which has said to be on the table for Turkey as well. Officials say the talks are preliminary and no moves are expected soon, but that they are a “recognition” that the last round of sanctions against the regime did not work.
Stay out of it and let the locals sort it out.
Secular(ish) Alawite dictatorship….or Sunnis Islamist dictatorship. Not much to choose from and it's not our business either way.
Keep telling the left wing that cause they don't notice that they're no different than the right wing or the empire they so abhor.
Humanitarian intervention to the rescue. Cause you know, that worked ever so well in Libya.
They could always encourage the Turks to go in. The Turks are aggressive enough and vicious enough to make short work of the Alawites, and establish a Sunni Islamic State.
It's time for Democrats to wake up. Is this the "change" you voted for? Obama needs to face a tough primary challenge. And it's time for black people to speak up. Is this the foreign policy you were expecting from the 1st black President?
How pathetic, the GOP now has at least one real anti-war candidate (Ron Paul) and your candidate (Obama) is even worse than Bush. Wake up people.
Dude, to paraphrase a famous historian: "The Democrats and Republicans are two wings of a single bird of prey." Dems wake up? They are awake dude, and they're pressing full steam ahead with their program.
Perhaps the one who needs to wake up is you.
Colonel Kurtz: Did they say why, Willard, why they want to terminate my command?
Captain Willard: I was sent on a classified mission, sir.
Kurtz: It's no longer classified. Is it?
If Antiwar had tried a little harder “to squeeze the truth from the information they can get” they would find that the “critics on Capitol Hill” who “accuse the Obama administration of being slow to react to the quickening deterioration of the security situation in Syria” are the likes of Tony Badran, a research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who appears to be concerned that Washington is “still pussyfooting.”
Well, we all should know whose interests the FDD serves. Hint: it’s the same country whose think tanks, NGOs, and friends in Congress and the media have been pushing the US to intervene to “protect” the Syrian people from the start of this crisis – a crucial and undeniable fact which has never been reported on this supposedly “non-interventionist” site.
Can you share the source(s) of your declarations about Badran and the FDD?
Sure.

I wonder what is wrong in the heads of american people wont they ever learn
The Free Syrian Army has been created by the Qatari and Saudi rulers who approved a crash program for the Qatari chief of staff Maj.-Gen Hamas Ali al-Attiya. The hard core is made up of 1,000 members of the Islamic Fighting Group in Libya-IFGL, which fought Qaddafi, and 1,000 operatives of the Ansar al-Sunna, the Iraqi Islamists which carried out 15 coordinated bomb attacks in Baghdad last Thursday killing 72 people and injuring 200.Qatar has just had them airlifted from Libya and Iraq to the southern Turkish town of Antakya (Antioch) in the border province of Hatay. The man appointed top commander of the Sunni intervention force headquartered in Antioch is none other than Abdel Hakim Belhaj, who is listed by Interpol as number three in Al Qaeda.

Debka is a right-wing Zionist propaganda organ. Zero credibility.
I'd say it has plenty of credibility when it's documenting efforts to overthrow the regime in Damascus, or are you under the impression the Likud just loves the current Syrian regime?
Yet AntiWar?? somehow miss out that bit in their analysis don't they? The number three of Al Qaeda and the terrorist forces in Iraq financed by the Gulf Arabs and working with the Nato and American forces to create a humanitarian corridor in Syria it doesn't get said like that on Antiwar?? does it? The troofers like Scott Horton always put it differently supported by his troofer research team Ditz and Glasser ably assisted by troofer Giraldi. Just makes you laugh doesn't it? Watching them weedle their way around the facts published throughout the rest of the world
Lybia was authorized by the UN and Khadafi was a terrorist, a mad man who had vowed to make his country a sea of blood and his was on the way to do that. Each country and case is a specific one. Assad should be pursued as a was criminal by the Hague, cut of all his assets and fund and given an ultimatum. If he does stop his own people killing, the UN should intervene. In no way one country should individually go to another country without UN authorization. If so Obama should be taken his nobel prize because he can not be a peace Nobel prized if he goes to war when his country is not under attack – as usual Americans always want to be given the credit for whatever goes on in the world (fall of the Eastern block, Arab Spring) where the world had been around for thousand of years before you were a country, so please we have breathed without you and will after you and we don't want to live like you, no interest whatsoever.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Having said that, the tragedy here is that NATO are as big – or worse – war criminals than the bloody dictators they seek to topple. What the left wing whackadoodles always fail to understand is that the enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend. Sometimes, things are just as they appear yet these heartless, poor excuses for human beings split hairs to satisfy their own dishonesty and inhumanity because for them, the only thing that matters is that these murderers talk the anti-imperialist talk. It's all a knee jerk reaction, mental masturbation. Too bad that we can't gather them all up, exchange them for Syrian civilians and send them all to Assad for a little TLC from their favorite tyrant du jour.
If you notice, the whole time that anti-war has been reported the horrors committed by the Assad against civilians, not a one of them had the balls to come out and say one thing. Now, they're all out of the woodwork like the vermin they are. Just like the Right Wing only they stand on the opposite side of the street but only because that's where the shade is. Hypocrites and fools! One and all.
"…Just makes you laugh doesn't it? Watching them weedle their way around the facts published throughout the rest of the world "
Can you, could you, would you be so kind as to cite the sources of your declarations and claims? Ie, by whom and where are these "facts published throughout the rest of the world"?
Thank you.

Google shows several other outlets who have picked the story up from DEBKA. Wikipedia has this to say about DEBKA:
"Wired.com's Noah Shachtman wrote in 2001 that the site "clearly reports with a point of view; the site is unabashedly in the hawkish camp of Israeli politics," adding that Debka had partnered with the right-wing news site WorldNetDaily for a weekly subscription product.[3] Yediot Achronot investigative reporter Ronen Bergman states that the site relies on information from sources with an agenda, such as neo-conservative elements of the US Republican Party, "whose worldview is that the situation is bad and is only going to get worse," and that Israeli intelligence officials do not consider even 10 percent of the site's content to be reliable.[1] Cornell Law professor Michael C. Dorf calls Debka his "favorite alarmist Israeli website trading in rumors."[4]
"The site's operators, in contrast, state that 80 percent of what Debka reports turns out to be true, and point to its year 2000 prediction that al-Qaeda would again strike the World Trade Center, and that it had warned well before the 2006 war in Lebanon that Hezbollah had amassed 12,000 Katyusha rockets pointed at northern Israel.[1]"
Accurate or not, it's an Israeli site with neo-con leanings likely to have little sympathy for the current Syrian regime.
Thats there job now he has to prove it to you, I know it but my job that Iget paid for like Antiwar is not to tell the criminal acts of so called Democracys. You now they support the very people they call terrorists, and treat them as friends to overthrough governments. There bad but when used to the allies advantage they are great. Its discusting and the so called good guys do the most harm to the entire planet.
Ditz’s revelation is about seven months too late. The turmoil engulfing Syria is far more complex than the Western narrative of freedom versus dictatorship. Dissidents are receiving material help from both Arab and non-Arab sources. Stratfor came out with a report that stated, "most of the opposition's more serious claims have turned out to be grossly exaggerated or simply untrue, thereby revealing more about the opposition's weaknesses than the level of instability inside the Syrian regime."
The departure of American troops from Iraq raises the specter of Iran extending influence not only through Shiite Iraq but also to the eastern Mediterranean Sea via its alliance with Syria. Western media coverage and hostile commentary has more to do with the struggle for influence over the Mideast and oil than the championship of democracy over authoritarian rule.
I'm curious about one thing: why is it that each and every single sanguine dictator that talks the anti-imperialist bullshit talk is immediately surrounded by controversy in his favor, yet, someone like Saleh gets to openly and freely slaughter as many civilians as he wants without so much as a peep from you left wing whackjobs? What the hell is wrong with you people? Are you aware that you are falling for the most rudimentary of propaganda that doesn't work on any one but mental defective individuals? As I've said many times before, what a shame that we can't trade you for a dozen or so Syrian civilians so that you can go over there and live in your own flesh and blood that which you so callously deny. Shame indeed!
So I guess we're just gonna ignore that whole 15 tr. in debt thing huh? Overextend the empire, invade as many countries as we can before the next clown gets in the white house and then when it falls it be on team coke and we can all switch back to team pepsi again.
Ron Paul or Soviet style implosion.
Not to worry. Syrian oil will pay for it. Just like Iraq.
lol I forgot what a piece of cake that was!
15tn in debt? Not an issue. You need to understand the Federal Reserve Bank. It is a privately owned bank that prints US Dollars. Do you think for one moment that money is any kind of an object to them? The US Dollar is World Reserve Currency and it is backed by a promise. It's official Monopoly money for all intents an purposes. Nothing moves until the money is there. Not one tank, bullet, can of beans, or gallon of fuel. Nothing. They set domestic and foreign policy.
"Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes her laws."
– Mayer Amschel Rothschild
I could quote Sir Josiah Stamp, too but I think you get the picture.
As has been pointed out here, the Pentagon's faux nemesis, al Qaeda, will be recruited and legitimized to fight for NATO's right to rule Syria. Of course, this is all for Israel's benefit, establishing the Jews only state as the unquestioned Hegemon throughout the region. At least, this is the theory, but what if something goes wrong with these 'best laid plans'? Will the Russians lay down like a rug to let NATO wipe their bloody boots on them? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
You clearly misunderstand the goals. The true purpose of intervention is not, I repeat not "…NATO's right to rule Syria," or, "…Israel's benefit…." That much has become obvious in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Libya, where stated goals have never been achieved. The largely unstated, true purpose and institutional goal of this intervention along with all other interventions since the collapse of the Soviet Union is to funnel money to the corporate coffers of the MIC and advance the careers of military brass and punditry (so they can eventually cash in from those corporate coffers).
YEA RIGHT, WILL SEE , ANOTHER LIBYA, RUSSIA WILL NOT LET IT HAPPEN, , AND THIS WILL NOT BE PRETTY, WW3 ON IT WAY , THANKS TO THE ISRAEL AND USA FASCISTS
Here we go. Liberals emboldened by the alleged success in Libya take on their next target for "democratization." If we are on these "humanitarian" missions, why aren't we taking out the clowns in North Korea? The ruling party/family in Cuba? Talk about humanitarian crises. Why is it that we're only concerned with Muslim countries?
likud must be thrilled and Obama satisfied that he pleased his masters.
Wait a minute! I thought that the Right Wing was in favor of NATO and against the dictators while the Left Wing was against NATO and in favor of the dictators who, to them, are not dictators but anti-imperialist heroes who may or may not have killed their own people in the most vicious of ways. But, hey, what's a few thousand dead civilians more or less when their favorite heroes talk the anti-imperialist talk, eh? After all, that's all that matters to the Lefties and no one from Jim Il Jong and his daddy to the Castros including the ME dictators can't possibly be bad if they're anti-imperialist. But if they are, they're forgiven. The tough talk is more important than the lives of innocent human beings. Besides, only fools don't know that these are either all lies or the CIA paying these people to get killed for a few Amerikan bucks. After all, it's a well-known fact that people who rebel against an anti-imperialist talking dictator are fools. Only the Lefties have a grip on reality and the truth.
SNARK, SNARK, SNARK!
"National Security Council"?… Whose might I ask?
tonbridge its true about Antiwar, they fail to report things that are imortant fact of Americas and there friends mostly Israel. They leave out any comment thats 100% fact. Its to the point of them protecting crimes done by people they may be friends with.I've seen many people complain about comments not being accepted, and its happened to me many times on very important points. But the site is informative on many things, but they block free speach.I never threaten or swear just speak facts and get blocked.Have been blocked from even commenting untill resently, without me useing any threats violence or racism.Like this fact America,Israel and Britan are the three biggest terrorist countrys in the world.Just because they use Aircraft Carriers and planes and tanks and even illegal weapons ,and kill there own citizens they think it excuses them from being terrorists. All the truth and I hope Antiwar starts stating the facts that will really inform the people on all illegal activitys by so called Democracys.
I love that people like Jan Burton are now saying stay out of it…
Well fat chance of that my dear, after the propaganda ground has been so carefully tilled…
It’s called manufacturing consent and it means the US can launch these interventions only because enough ordinary people believe these fake news stories…
Aunt Betsy and uncle Ralph read the paper and shake their heads how this Assad bogeyman can murder his own people just for protesting peacefully…
They will never know the truth…that this is FAKE NEWS…thanks to “guardians of truth” like antiwar.com who are asleep at the switch…
Just today there is a perfect example…this website carries a headline:
“Syrian troops kill protesters despite monitors”
It’s from the UK Independent and the whole bit of fake news is based on accounts from “activists” and that London Syrian exile group…
Of course very conveniently these atrocities happened in Hama where there are no monitors yet…
Yesterday the fake news was Syrian tanks shelling demonstrators in Homs…with miraculously zero building damage of any kind…
of course now that the monitors are there the headlines suddenly shift to where they are not…
What a farce…
I have to wonder how can antiwar’s “news department” be fooled so easily…this game is quite transparent and can be easily debunked using nothing but logic…
So they are either complete fools or they have some sort of agenda…you decide dear reader…
Meanwhile the FAKE NEWS from antiwar.com just keeps coming…
This despite massive negative reader feedback…talk about responsiveness…
Excellent comment as always. I notice with some concern that my comment on this article has not been approved. Perhaps that is how they will deal with dissent from their actual antiwar readers: they will disappear us.
Considering the shinning victory in Libya, no doubt Obama feels empowered and considers Syria a slam dunk. The poor Syrians should get ready, if the Assads have killed about 10,000 civilians, NATO will have to double that count, after all, a petty sanguine dictator is no match for them and they can't allow him to outshine them that way.
PS: Ha'aretz was reporting yesterday that the US and Israel were engaged in secret talks planning the attack of Iran. So, we'll have to make a wager and see where they go in first, if Syria or Iran.
So, it's war!
They really believe that Libya was a success so now on to Syria. Someone needs to tell them that Syria is not Libya and that even little Libya was not a success at all.
We should all keep an eye open for what comes next in Liberia as well. We are sending more "advisers" and "Trainers" there on the 3rd of January. I don't know if that has been reported or not. My best friends Brother will be the CO in charge of "training".
Stockpile your A-bombs — what is that to me?
Art
“The whole mindset that is being built up here is dangerous.
The mindset that… Syrian… internal problems is a concern
to non-Syrians and these non-Syrians have a right to have
a say in this matter.”
Art is a confusion generator, for his posts are pure fiction and generate nothing but confusion.
For what if Syria were to become like Israel a colony of Empire USA? And what if in such a corrupt deal, like Israel, A-bombs were given to Syria by USA?
So, exactly what is Art’s problem, does he not care what goes on inside the borders of Israel enslaved Gaza? Or could it be that he is here confusing us laboring men so that we don’t take a close look at his excessive wealth?
Boiling Frog has been killing you guys on the Syria coverage. I expected a lot more from this site than we have been getting on Syria. We've been operating out of Turkey (Incirlik) and Jordan (Al-Mafraq area) for months now. I told you guys the same yahoos they used on Libya are running the exact same procedure in Syria, with the addition of one Colonel Riad Al-Assad (running guns and terrorists into Syria from Turkey). Why this has been an issue for you guys is a matter of serious concern to me. Whatever changed needs to be fixed el f-cking pronto.
Yeah it's hiliarious to watch the disinformation at work. Debka is blamed because it's right wing and Thiery Massien who has just come back from Syria says the same thing as does Webster Tarpley who is left wing. So we can't believe left wingers as well as right. Russia Today is reporting this news so now we can't believe Russians because as one American once told me they are black men with white skins. The Chinese news agencies are also reporting these facts again these are yellow skinned liars. The Pakistan, Turkish and Turkish press are also reporting these facts, need I go on.
It's hiliarious listen to the shills screaming listen only to me. We are troofers the rest of the world is liars.
And instead of leading the fight with facts and hard research against the lies that stimulate the R2P instinct, this website has once again fallen for all of the lies that led NATO into Libya and the various overt and covert interventions (like the lie of the "Green Movement").
This is important and all readers should take note: Antiwar.com has repeatedly pushed the lies that lead NATO to attack. Draw your own conclusions. The "moderators" here will say that they just don't have enough information and any mistakes are not theirs. Do you believe that, readers? Are you that gullible, or did you first come here as I did to see behind the bullshit of the mainstream propaganda machine?
Another inhumanitarian intervention? Look what it did to Libya:
Interesting! – 16 Things Libya Will Never See Again
1. There was no electricity bill in Libya; electricity was free for all its citizens.
2. There was no interest on loans, banks in Libya were state-owned and loans given to all its citizens at zero percent interest by law.
3. Having a home was considered a human right in Libya.
4. All newlyweds in Libya used to receive $60,000 dinar (U.S.$50,000) by the government to buy their first apartment so to help start up the family.
5. Education and medical treatments were free in Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25 percent of Libyans were literate. Today, the figure is 83 percent.
6. If Libyans wanted to take up farming career, they would have received farming land, a farming house, equipment, seeds and livestock to kick start their farms… all for free.
Anti-war isn't what it pretends to be. It is another propagand tool/disinformation souce in the service of the Big Satan.
Yet another humanitarian bloodbath in the making for the israelis, how stupid and retarded are you americans? Mind your own business and stop provoking the middle east.
How is the reader supposed to understand the concepts of "aid", "humanitarian aid", "safe zone" and "recognition" when citation marks usually indicate an alternate interpretation?
Btw it is not news, when it's been reported at least since november http://www.boilingfrogspost.com/2011/11/21/bfp-ex…
