As a top figure in one of the NATO nations most loudly opposed to the military attack, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan says his government is now looking to broker a cease-fire soon in Libya.
NATO is poised to take full control over the military operations inside Libya as soon as Wednesday. Though Erdogan insists Turkey will be trying to do this cease-fire in the context of the NATO operation, it is unclear how welcome it will be.
This is particularly true because a number of US, French and British officials are looking at this war as open-ended, and seemingly an end unto itself. This puts Turkey, as with previous efforts to broker a deal in Iran, at odds with more hawkish members of the alliance.
The Turkish government is said to be talking with both the Gadhafi regime and the rebels at the moment, offering itself as a “mediator” to help with a transition. Exactly how well they are being received is unknown at this time.
If successful it may once again allow Turkey to improve its status amongst Arab nations, however, many of which were initially in favor of the no-fly zone in Libya but balked when the US and France quickly escalated it into a massive bombing campaign. If they can broker the deal, it will once again cement Turkey’s recent reputation for independence from the US in foreign affairs.
I am sorry, but it is absurd to believe that Turkey can broker anything. It has been a failure at it.
You have been taken in by the mainstream media and Turkey.
Turkey can't even broker deals with dissident groups in its own country – including Kurds and Alevis.
How about Turkey brokering a deal with Cyprus? It failed.
With Armenia? Turkey failed.
With Israel? Turkey failed.
How about EU membership? Turkey failed.
How about the Turkish military? Erdogan failed.
This mediation mania is a continuing PR stunt by Turkey to stroke its own ego. Get real.
Awesome.
Turkey has problems with its minorities. Current gov. made more reforms than any before it and tries to write a constitution addressing the problems but no it is a failure.
Armenians back away because of nationalist pressure, Turkey is a failure.
Cyprus and EU play dirty and don't keep their promises, Turkey is a failure.
Israel gets criticized for its injustice, Turkey is a failure.
EU states block chapters because they don't want Turkey in the EU. Well, it is because Turkey is a failure.
Just showing the other side of the coin. I am not saying Turkey is perfect. Far from, it. I criticize every unjust action commited by it.
Oversimplifying these problems, blaming all of them on Turkey, labeling them as failures and in turn calling Turkey incompetent is utter nonsense.
Even if it made any sense, the world is not black and white. And one unsuccesful attemp at something doesn't mean you will never be succesful. What kind of thinking is that?
I support every attempt to stop the violence in Libya.
Why don't you care about innocent Libyans more than an opportunity to badmouth Turkey?
Also don't accuse an antiwar reporter of being brainwashed next time. You sound ridiculous.
