The Wednesday release of CIA contractor Raymond Davis came after the payment of $2.34 million in Diyat (blood money) to the legal heirs of the two people he killed on the streets of Lahore. The real mystery, however, is where that money came from, as US officials denied paying it.
Some reports had Pakistani government officials fronting the money, with a secret pledge that it would be funneled back to them by the Obama Administration at some point in the future.
But the latest report seems to be that the Saudi Arabian government actually paid the money in an attempt to rescue the US-Pakistani relationship. The payment was said to be temporary, however, and again reimbursement by the US is expected at some point in the future.
The Davis “blood money” payment has been controversial in Pakistan as a way of the US buying its way out of trouble, but may also be controversial within the US, as presumably whenever that money is reimbursed it will be in taxpayer dollars.
Regardless if diyat was paid or not or by whom, the Pakistanis still have (or, from their perspective, SHOULD have) a case against Davis for his spying activities in their country.
My test for this sort of thing is this: if a Pakistani agent had killed American citizens in the course of cnoducting intelligence operations against the US on our home soil… do you think he would have been treated the same way by the US government? You already know the answer- it's no. A Pakistani would- regardless of his actual affiliation- be immediately branded as 'aiding the enemy' and tossed into Gitmo or worse and be stuck without any recourse whatsover. And guess what? The US public would be fine with that- after he's not like one of us, is he? He's… well…foreign, and one of those Arab-looking guys, and probably a Muslim, and of course all Muslims know where Bin Laden is hiding because we all talk to him on the phone at least once a week. (Okay, this last bit was obviously sarcastic, but you see my point.) Double standard displayed for the world to see, and all for politics.
Don't need to go that far.Recenty what happened to a butterfly weight lady famously known as AFIA SIDDIQUI,who almost gunned down few hundred American braves in Afghanistan. Then cam the American Justice that was served with its utmost fairness, just 86 years to fx her crime.
John it is Might is Right era.Soon it will be over.No worries.
James Bond had a license to kill, too, but I doubt it cost 2.34 million. This redneck rent-a-Rambo committed 4 murders (2 first degree, 2 felony murders for the run over motorcyclist and the suicidal widow) and got away with it. Why was the Obama administration so desperate to get him sprung? My guess is that the Indian and Pakistani press accounts that Davis was collaborating with Taliban leaders to carry out terrorist attacks against civilians in Pakistan to create a pretext for more US aggression hold the answer. An independent counsel investigation is urgently needed.
You are right but the history of super powers is the same and they went donw because such acts. Even pro american pakistani generals are fed up with america.
Now they have killed 44 jirga pro govt. and will ignite feur which do excists but america is used to to illegal acts when CIA can kill their own president in 1962 then they can kill every one.
These methods which Raymond applied in Irak to apply in Pakistan would be much more desaterous.
God may bless american administration who are creating hatred between the nations.
I have become mad on america behaviour and killings around the world and really wish as God has punished arrogant nations and americans should get this blessing too. Enough is enough.
Whether it was the Pakistanis, the Saudis or anyone else that paid off the families, it almost certainly was a money laundering operation. The US government will have discreetly arranged a reimbursement — plus some payment for the service.
This doesn't hold any water. The US paid that money. Why is it so difficult to see that? Better yet, why in the world would the Saudis pay it? What is it to them whether the US and Pakistan are friends or foes? Aren't they just busy enough right now slaughtering their own people as well as the Baharainians to go messing into something that means nothing to them? This is the craziest explanation that I've come across yet.
I'll tell you why the Saudis paid it: to get Obama to turn a blind eye to their butchery of Shias in Bahrain.
The US paid one way or the other American public needs to realize how the world looks at America and not just so called terrorist are wating for a perfect oppertunity to attack there are probably powerful coutrys just wating for America to fall. Its timethey not the people but the government to realize the way they look to the world.American military is fighting unjust and illegal wars and the government keeps acting like they care about the citizens of the world but they care less about fellow americans there kids never fight in wars look at bush he was in the army but never was his life on the line because of his familly watch Bush Family fortunes and see.If the military only new the truth of why they are dieing for but alot are going to find out its not hard just search .And I now alot have and agree these waes are for the wrong reasons and are filled with war crimes…
I saw some msg board comments on South Asian sites that said Green Cards were thrown into the mix of remunerations. Maybe false but it is interesting to see people think it true.
