Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned on Tuesday that Iran would have a “severe” response to any “aggression” against the country, comments that came a day after President Trump said he would support another Israeli attack on Iran.
“The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to any oppressive aggression will be harsh and regrettable,” Pezeshkian wrote on X.
Trump said on Monday, while meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that he would back an attack if Iran “continues” its conventional missile program or tries to rebuild its civilian nuclear program that was damaged by US airstrikes during the US-Israeli war against the Islamic Republic. He also threatened to “knock the hell” out of Iran if it “builds up again.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also responded to Trump’s threats in a letter to his foreign counterparts, according to Iran’s Press TV. Araghchi said that any consequences as a result of a future attack on Iran would “rest squarely with the US” and that Tehran “will not hesitate to respond in a decisive and regret-inducing manner to any act of aggression.”
During the previous war, Iran responded to the US bombing its nuclear facilities by launching missiles at the US’s Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Iran gave the US notice of its plans to target the base hours before the attack, giving the US plenty of time to evacuate and prepare to intercept the missiles.
But in a future conflict, Iran’s response would likely be more intense, and it may not give notice. The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces warned in a statement on Monday that “any renewed hostile act against the country will be met with a far harsher, more crushing, and more damaging response than in the past.”
