The two reliable records throughout the Obama Administration have been record deficit spending and record military spending. But with the two rising precipitously, it seems that people are actually starting to wonder if they are at all related.
As impossible as it may seem, the fiscally conservative Tea Party folks in the Congress are breaking new group in wondering if the massive military budget, which dwarfs any other nation’s on the planet and indeed rivals the whole rest of the world combined, might have a deleterious effect on the nation’s budget.
And while most of the long-standing Republicans are reluctant to consider anything but dramatic increases in military spending going forward, their simultanous promises to get spending under control suggest that, sooner or later, the military will have to be considered.
To that end the Tea Party is going to have to rely on support from what is left of the antiwar left if they want to push military spending cuts around the eternally hawkish centrists in both parties. It is an uphill battle, but with both deficit and military spending rising going forward, it is an issue that will only take on more importance going forward.
Things are getting tough for the US armed forces- times are tight. I heard, and this is just rumor so don't get scared generals- but I have it on good authority- that maybe half a dozen of the over 250 US military golf courses around the globe might scale back their hours of operation!
Tough times for the warrior poet paladins these days. Feel so bad for the heroes.
Not a single penny will be cut from military or agencies funds as they have upper hand in the politics of USA..
Deficit will grow indefinitely which means destruction of the institution and civil unrest.
I take a macheivellian view of the situation. The more we keep domestic spending high, the harder it will be to spend money on perpetual war. But I agree with Ghouri for the short term at least and through Obama's two terms as president. Only a true depression and government bankruptcy will stop the spending. The only thing that can stop that is the republicans putting up an antiwar candidate. And he doesn't have to win. Obama has shown himself to be a triangulator.
At least temporarily killed the Patriot Act and wants to reduce military spending. I am impressed. Istill can't vote for them but I can respect them for a change. Maybe, they and Ron Paul can get together and give us a real election.
Truly patriotic military men should be looking for ways to trim their budget for the good of the country.
