At least 65 people were killed today and 160 others were wounded when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest at a police recruitment center in Tikrit, in the northern province of Salaheddin.
The recruitment center had a massive line of applicants out front, and the vast majority of the casualties, according to local police, were would-be recruits who were waiting for permission to enter the center.
The provincial government has announced a three day period of mourning, and some of the more severely wounded have been transferred to hospitals in Kirkuk and Mosul, after the local hospital was overwhelmed by casualties.
The attack is the deadliest in months and the latest indication that, despite claims that the insurgency is in retreat, they remain capable of launching mass-casualty attacks aimed at security infrastructure.
Well, now that we know things are going so well in Iraq, let's check to see how things are going in Afghanistan.
The surge worked?
Oh, I thought Obama said the war was over in Iraq. Except for those 50,000 "non-combat" troops, whatever they are. Enough of this unneeded bloodshed – End the wars now!
Such attacks may well turn out to be counterproductive by allienating part of the population. They have a polarizing effect. The Iraqis are devided. They join the 'police' because they need a job; they do it for the money, which indeed is not very patriotic. There are probablly Sunnies who feel unsafe when the Americans leave, as demanded by al-Sadr and the majority of Shi-ites. There may be recruits in the resistance who join so they can attack US and 'government' forces from within, as has happened before. In occupied Europe during WW2 the German occupiers had police and entire SS-divisions recruited from nationals in the occupied countries. There will always be people willing to sell and betray their country for the 'Judas Penny'. It does not make sense to attack and kill recruits, even though they join for selfish and unpatriotic reasons. The situation in Iraq remains confused and uncertain for the time being.
You would think they would have figured out a way to avoid those lines by now. At first I thought it was because the US of A was organizing things, but evidently that is not the problem.
