The US, China, and India attended talks on the Ukraine war in Saudi Arabia on Saturday that were aimed at convincing neutral countries to support Ukrainian demands for a peace deal.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the meetings in Jeddah were attended by officials from 42 countries, including other non-aligned nations; Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa. While being portrayed in Western media as peace talks, Russia was not invited.
Similar talks were held in Denmark in June, but twice as many nations sent envoys to Jeddah. Sources told the Journal that at the Denmark summit, Ukraine pushed other countries to adopt its demands for peace, which includes a full Russian withdrawal before talks can even happen. But the sources said that in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine did not stress that point.
The report reads: “A senior European official said that Ukraine didn’t push again for its peace plan to be accepted and other countries weren’t insisting that Kyiv drop it. Nor was there any crossfire over Ukraine’s demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops. Ukraine didn’t press the point, two diplomats said, nor was it challenged by developing countries.”
If Ukraine dropped its precondition for a full Russian withdrawal, it would mark a significant concession from Kyiv. But Western powers are still arguing against the idea of a ceasefire. China presented its 12-point peace plan at the summit, which it released publicly in February.
The Chinese plan calls for a pause in fighting and an immediate resumption of peace talks, but the Journal report said European diplomats “pushed back to warn that an unconditional cease-fire could simply create a frozen conflict and allow Russia to consolidate its control of Ukrainian territory.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken made similar comments in June when he publicly rejected the idea of a ceasefire ahead of Ukraine’s counteroffensive.
Representing the US at the Saudi Arabia summit were National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Victoria Nuland, who was recently promoted to acting deputy secretary of state. The two US officials met with Li Hui, a Chinese diplomat appointed as an envoy to seek peace in Ukraine.
The Journal report said that at the conclusion of the Jeddah summit, there was an agreement that respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity should be at the heart of future peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Most countries that attended, including China, agreed to hold another summit in the coming weeks that would also exclude Russia.
China, India Attend Talks on Ukraine War in Saudi Arabia
2 weirdo countries are having talks re: a third country in yet a fourth country.
dude you couldn’t make this sh*t up.
OMG
What is weird about India and China? On a PPP basis, the biggest and 3rd biggest economies in the world? Number 4 is far behind.
the dudes in those countries eat things like bats and grasshoppers.
that makes them weird in my book.
i eat marshmallows which keeps my girly figure.
what.
I eat at Road Kill Café–You kill it, We grill it!
Local bar does that but they just provide the grill and the wood coals. Whatever meat you bring you cook it.
Bambi gets grilled quite frequently.
I felt weirded out as well. LOL
Which BRICS countries attended? Ummm…ALL OF THEM! (Oh, sorry. With the exception of Russia.)
Bit of a joke there for an “economic alliance. Hahaha.
Yeah, it was just another peace summit to discuss a peace plan that rules out both a ceasefire AND peace talks until there’s nothing to shoot over or talk about.
But other than that, and the triple-digit temperatures, it was a remarkably important step on the road to peace. Right?
LOL. “China, India Attend Talks on Ukraine War in Saudi Arabia” (without Russia). And in the end, the only thing they decided was to yet have another meeting still without Russia? That’s like cornering a cockroach while trying to keep it alive. (Sarcasm)
I suspect Russia is no longer interested in peace talks to end the war in Ukraine. The West has done nothing but lie to Russia from the outset. It seems likely Russia will launch a massive and decisive offensive just as the on-going Ukrainian “counter-offensive” fails completely. The Russian people want this absurd proxy war over just as much as the ordinary Ukrainian citizen wants it over. Perhaps the start of Russia’s offensive will be their non-nuclear EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) weapons exploding over Kiev.
Ukraine is talking peace deal?
Sure they have their quest for a return to past borders as a prominent point in all of the talking, but that they are actually speaking in a formal setting about any peace deal has some significance.
Joe is going to have a hard time keeping this going so he can run as a war time President and all the plusses that entails.
Old habits die slow. Where does thos assumption come from — that US convened the event to convince and pressure other nations to go along with its vision for Ukraine and turn others against Russia.
How blindingly obvious can it get — it is the China-Russia alligned world that has created this platform for US and Ukraine to come and be heard. Was Japan invited? South Korea, Australia or Canada? Any European vassals? Of course not — it is clear that this grouping of countries that did not partake in sanctioning Russia nor condemnation.
Look at the triumphalism when “sovereignitu and territorial integrity” is mentioned . This grouping of countries is wise enough to let US have this “victory”. Because they ALL know UN Charter, Article 1. By heart. It consists of two paragraphs. One, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and two, right of people to self-determinatiin. These are two sides of tge same coun. Cannot have one without the other. It plainly states that tge rights of any state to its sovereignity and territorial integrity is ABRIDGED. It is condirioned by all people having equal rights, If not, people that are abused have the right to self determination.
US abused this principle time and again. Encouraging secessionism even when no violatiins of legal and political rights existed, Time and again, US financed separatists and terrotist tactics in order to force states to act against such grouos. Mind you — once police or mikitary actions startex, we heard loyd and incessant howls of “human rights violations”. Hunan rights?
Human rights of armed secessionist groups? Remember, there is never any mention of legal discrimination, acts of state agaunst other nationalities political righrs to organize, have reoresentatives, right to vote for candidates of their choice, right to their media in their language, schools, their religion,
This gathering hosted by Saudi Arabia is tge symbol of defiance. Who better to represent it than Saudi young crown prince, persin whom US tried to topple from poower, accussed of soectaxularly staged murder iif a journalist. But his ciuntry and its leadership stood by him. Stood by him as he expanded OPEC into OPEC+ to include Russia, stood by as he with the assustannce if Russia and China torpedoed US plans for Middle East by establishing diplomatic relations with Iran.
Present there is another villiffied, jailed and again triumphant Lula da Silva — US nemesis. How many people know the shots US took at Modi over years? And US still does in spite of gushing over India.
Russia is not needed there. This gathering is a gathering of its supporters.
All those that know exactly US and irs lulpet Zelinski plans to deprive Russian speaking MAJORITY of Ukrainian population of its culture, language and religion. A State created Church has been imposed on Ukrainians, and property of their own religion transfered to this state created entity. Add to this all well known abuses of political rights, banning Russian language in this bi-lingual state, forced takeover of private property, arbitrary imprisonments, executions, disappearances.
There is a whole body of evidence that can be examined to make a case for self-determination. And since there are many more regions in Ukraine that given the right to vote would vote to joining Russia and exiting Ukraine.
These can be solved by ballir box not bullets. For a President that just passed the law to change date Christmas is observed to December 25, to be more “Western”, I will argue that his approval today is in single digits! And he is representing Ukraine on workd stage!
Keep in mind that countries in attendance are well famikiarized with the plught of Palestinians. And are looking here at the Palestinization of Russian soeakers of Ukraine. The last thing world needs is another Israel in Kiev lording over majority of subjugated Russian soeakers without political rights, rights to prooerty and even own religion.
We may be blind to this design, and Pope’s not so hidden triumph — but the rest of the attendees in Jeddah are not ammused,
Are there any who are too blind to see this vast/ over reach……..?????? Think of their right to speak their mother tongue AND ALSO the practice of their religious traditions….???? Celebrations & when they are to be observed. Perhaps he could change some of HIS Jewish traditions FOR ALL JEWS WORLD WIDE… Is there no end to this man.s megalomania and manipulation of other peoples lives…?????????
The US and Ukraine hoped to convince neutral countries to join in demands for total surrender by Russia.
Those other nations attended, but that does not mean they came with the same intention.
Perhaps they had dreams of talking sense to Ukraine? Fat chance, but perhaps they felt they might try.
I am getting a bad feeling these days that about changes here at antiwar.c-m. I’m not sure sure when I first noticed these changes, but things came more into focus when the links to articles in U.S. News & world Reports began to go from a trickle to a flow. The next shoe dropped for me when going to these links I found some attempt to sign in with google… “No passwords problems, google for all my interests” or some such. There never was any place to gripe about small things or large here which concerned us, even under Raimondo. I do not like google. Believe they are not our friend and the last thing I want is to have them cataloging my comments along my various other sins against what passes as the “Rules based Order.” It is tough times for all of us Eric, but really is it necessary to let those guys in this tent? It sure seems like MSM along with CBS, CNN. YAHO, and dreaded NPR. There are many other places I could go, but THIS has been the best fit for me for about 30 years. I just hope that this place remain a place Raimondo would be proud to have co-created, and I feel safe.
“when the links to articles in U.S. News & world Reports began to go from a trickle to a flow”
Do you have any recollection of when that was?
I recently started helping out with news links, and US News & World Report was one of the sources I was given on my list to pull from. I don’t think I’ve been overdoing that particular venue, but I could be wrong.
Not sure what you’re describing with the Google thing. They’re pretty much everywhere, and lots of sites use them as a convenient sign-in option.
Most of the Yahoo! News articles are pulled from other places, including but not limited to AFP, which I think is a favored source here. Unfortunately, AFP doesn’t seem to make its feed directly available, so we have to find their stuff elsewhere — Yahoo! News, Daily Mail, etc.
