National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will travel to Denmark this weekend for a meeting organized by Ukraine that is expected to be attended by officials from several countries that have remained neutral on the war, including India, China, South Africa, and Brazil.
Ukraine requested the meeting with non-aligned countries, and Sullivan is expected to push them to increase support for Kyiv. The meeting hasn’t been announced and was first reported by Financial Times on Wednesday.
Victoria Nuland, the US undersecretary of state for political affairs, will also attend the meeting along with a senior EU official. The guest list hasn’t been finalized and could change before the meeting.
The officials at the meeting are expected to discuss peace proposals, and the Western side will likely push for the neutral countries to come around to Kyiv’s demands for an end to the war, which include a full Russian withdrawal before any negotiations can happen.
The non-aligned countries have been pushing for a ceasefire in Ukraine, putting them at odds with the US. The Biden administration has not only rejected the idea of a pause in fighting but has disparaged other countries for calling for peace.
“Some countries will call for a ceasefire. And on the surface, that sounds sensible – attractive, even. After all, who doesn’t want warring parties to lay down their arms? Who doesn’t want the killing to stop?” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier this month.
“But a ceasefire that simply freezes current lines in place and enables Putin to consolidate control over the territory he’s seized…It would legitimize Russia’s land grab. It would reward the aggressor and punish the victim,” he added.

I’m going to wait and see on this one. On the surface, the meeting looks to be a complete waste of time. Blinken lost considerable credibility when Biden made it clear this week that Blinken’s talks with Xi were insincere. So, my expectations are that either promises will be made that unaligned would be fools to believe, or threats will be made to try to intimidate them.
Since Nukand is involved, it’ll probably be on the threats side …
I wouldn’t put it past Nuland to throw Blinken under the bus to have her way.
