US officials have openly refuted the press conference held earlier in the week by the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MeK), an Iranian opposition group that claimed to have uncovered a secret nuclear site near Qazvin.
According to the officials the site, buried in the mountains outside of Qazvin has existed and been known about for many years, and has absolutely nothing to do with Iran’s nuclear program.
The site had been alleged to be an as-yet-uncompleted uranum enrichment site, which would be in keeping with Iran’s stated plans to expand their enrichment capabilities so as to be self-sufficient in fuel production for its civilian nuclear program.
That the US would be the one to refute the allegations is something of a surprise, as US officials have made a habit of making up scary-sounding allegastions about Iran’s nuclear program for years, including recently “unveiling” an Iranian site several days after Iran publicly announced its existence.
