Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned Wednesday that Russia is willing to defend itself by any means, including by using nuclear weapons.
“It is obvious to all the powers that be that if the US wants to defeat Russia, we are heading for a conflict on a global scale. If the US wants to defeat Russia, we have the right to defend ourselves with any weapon, including of the nuclear kind,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy of the Russian Security Council, has made similar comments throughout the war. But his latest warning came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced he was suspending Russia’s participation in New START, the last nuclear arms control treaty between the US and Russia.
Medvedev said Putin’s move was “long overdue” due to the US’s hostility toward Russia. In his speech on Tuesday, Putin said the Western powers want to turn a “local conflict into a global confrontation,” which he said “represents an existential threat to our country.” Russia’s military doctrine allows the use of nuclear weapons if the existence of the Russian state is threatened.
Despite the warnings from Russia, Biden downplayed the danger of New START being suspended. “It’s a big mistake to do that. Not very responsible. But I don’t read into that that he’s thinking of using nuclear weapons or anything like that,” he said.
Back in October, Biden acknowledged that the risk of “nuclear armageddon” was higher than at any time since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The US has escalated its involvement in the war since Biden’s warning, making a direct clash between the US and Russia more likely.
I’m impressed that Biden even knows what nuclear armageddon is… Or does he?….
He just cares about his minority housekeeper to bring his favorite pudding every Sunday.
He doesn’t care – he’s already at that age that he knows he doesn’t have too many years left, so he just doesn’t care. It has always only been about him.
Whatever kind of President he want to be remembers as, currently he is not one to be remembered at all.
I wouldn’t let Biden help me cross the street, coot that I am, because he’d probably abandon me in the middle of the intersection to be run down by a delivery van. I wouldn’t let him put a bandage on my knee if I tripped because he’d put it on the wrong leg. I’d never, ever let him walk my dog because he’d tie it up outside the 7-11 to go buy a Big Gulp and walk out the back door and never remember it was waiting for him and the pound would take it away.
The article talks about Medvedev usual threats and you are going after Biden. Anything to add about Medvedev?
Medvedev = Lindsey Graham insofar as the rambo talk is concerned.
that we can agree on but it doesn’t save Medvedev from objective criticism on the matter.
Except that Medvedev is a lot more rational than Lindsay Graham.
It also talks about Biden.
Yep, towards the end but the headline and most of it is about the loud chihuahua.
You: Anything to say about Medvedev?
So, two paragraphs of a 6 paragraph article aren’t allowed to be discussed? Jesus, do you ever listen to yourself.
Me: I have as much use for a former president of Russia as I do a former president of the US.
You just love to defend the Kremlin. But that’s ok, when have you not? Nothing new. It’s your duty.
I was defending the person who commented on Biden numbnuts.
Don’t even waste your time. It’s obvious he’s channeling Herman Goering on how any form of government gets the people to support their wars.
True — him too. Although as Biden is MY PRESIDENT I’m more alarmed at his behavior.
Not this tired old threat again? US / NATO support for Ukraines struggle with Russia ends at the 2000 border. So Russia proper is quite secure, as unaided it seems unlikely Ukraine will make much progress into Russia.
Russians don’t feel secure with Anglo-American grunts in Ukraine. In fact, they don’t feel secure with heaving Pentagon filth anywhere in Slavic countries.
You wouldn’t want to have Russians and Chinese in Canada, Mexico and Australia, would ya? Remove your rapist claws from Ukraine before it gets cut off.
And the US promised Russia NATO wouldn’t expand “one inch eastward” in 1991.
False, the US NEVER promised such thing.
Find me where that was written.
Plus your comment is way off John’s statement.
https://mltoday.com/new-document-us-promised-not-to-expand-nato-eastward/
And my comment talks about promises. Completely relevant.
Thanks for throwing that link up, wars.
It won’t do any good with Don Julio, who just repeats the ” US NEVER promised such thing.
Find me where that was written.” BS every time it’s mentioned and then slinks off until he thinks he can lie about it again and not have it remembered that he lied about it before.
But others who didn’t know for sure that yes, the US promised, may find the proof useful.
Same response I gave to Wars.
And I don’t have to lie about this. There was no promise unless you interpret individual’s statements as promises.
Sure, if by “interpret” you mean “read.”
You’re right that you don’t have to lie about this. You’re choosing to lie about it for some unknown reason.

Wow, who knew that Doom “Things Are True or False Because I WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNTTTTTTT Them to be True or False” Sternz was moonlighting at Politifact and Harvard?
The headline is misleading. “not one inch eastward’ statement by one individual is not a promise. That’s like me saying Putin promised not to Invade Ukraine last February. Let me triple down, the US NEVER promised such thing. Many scholars have debated this and no one has come up with any proof of such statement especially written.

Thomas already bitch slapped you, so I feel no need to respond.
Don, you had better research the issue, because there are memos from NATO leaders that, yes, such assurances were made to Russia. The only President in the 30+ years since that agreement (diplomacy conducted among leaders, with out a document, which is done all the time) to adhere to the agreement was H.W. Bush. It was Clinton who fired off the starting gun for the expansion of NATO.
H.W. just didn’t have any time.
I don’t have to do any research because it was never promised and you cannot prove me wrong.
It was promised, you’ve been proven wrong, and if you continue to lie about it people will continue to point out you’re lying about it.
The problem with continuing to lie about Issue A when there’s clear, unambiguous, airtight proof that you’re lying about Issue A, is that people will start assuming you’re also lying about Issue B, C, D, E …
If that’s the reputation you want, by all means don’t let anyone stop you from lying, though.
Doesn’t have to be “written”. Helmut Kohl, German Chancellor, said the same thing.
How convenient.
There’s Helmut in the picture – how convenient that he was “on the record too”.
https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/briefing-book/russia-programs/2017-12-12/nato-expansion-what-gorbachev-heard-western-leaders-early
And the west is trying to topple Putin? Don’t they know there are more crazier people waiting in line to takeover Russia?
That, is the ambiguity this situation has.
This is what cowards and losers sound like.
I just finished working the math, found a solution and I’ll show my work: (If the US wants to defeat Russia, we have the right to defend ourselves with nuclear weapons) = (If Russia wants to defeat the US, we have the right to defend ourselves with nuclear weapons) = (If the US wants to defeat China, we have the right to defend ourselves with nuclear weapons.) That was an easy math problem. All you need to do is not want to militarily defeat a country with nuclear weapons. I didn’t even have to use one hand to count anything. My math checks out and it’s not crazy or unhinged at all… Well that’s true unless you’re a CIA talking pointer. (Sarcasm alert)
Biden is an expert in bringing war and miserability to the world. His administration is full of neocons, and wanna be neocon nutcases. He has learned nothing from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which he supported. He will fight Russia with every Ukranian.
And every special ops personnel he has sent to Ukraine to train the Ukraine personnel. There are reports of several volunteers (mercenaries) who have come home in a body bags. The deal with tactical nukes is there would be nothing to send home.
President Biden, let me count the number of treaties with Russia we have withdrawn from………………….
The last couple of days seems to show that day by day we are moving closer to a ‘no going back’ scenario. Putin to deploy Sarmat missles this year, just the day after saying they are pulling out of the treaty.
What we thought was going to happen, hasn’t.
