US special operations forces launched a rare raid in Syrian government-controlled territories in Syria, killing one person and arresting two more.
US Central Command said on Thursday that the raid was carried out overnight near the city of Qamishli and targeted an ISIS member. According to Al Jazeera, it was the “first known” US raid in Syrian-government-controlled territory.
According to CENTCOM, the raid targeted and killed Rakkan Wahid al-Shammri, an ISIS member accused of helping the group smuggle weapons. But the newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported a person with a different name was killed. A source told the newspaper that a person named Abu Hail, who was accused of collaborating with ISIS, was killed after refusing to surrender to US forces.
Later on Thursday, CENTCOM said it carried out airstrikes in an unspecified area in northern Syria. The command claimed two ISIS leaders were killed in the strikes and that its “initial assessment” found no civilians were harmed, but the Pentagon is notorious for undercounting civilian casualties.
There are currently about 900 US troops stationed in eastern Syria. The US also backs Kurdish forces in the region, allowing Washington to control about one-third of the country’s territory, an area where most of Syria’s oil resources are.
The Syrian government is opposed to the US occupation and called for US forces to leave during the recent UN General Assembly in New York. On top of the occupation, the US maintains crippling economic sanctions on Syria that are designed to prevent the country’s reconstruction.
The neocons are trying to get US forces in Syria wiped out by inflaming the locals with small scale attacks, which is all that 900 men could do. Remember the Alamo, the Maine, Pearl Harbor, etc. The neocon’s grand strategy, great power competition, vital national blah blah blah is burning down around them and they’re fleeing forward.
“killing one person and arresting two more”
Were they read their rights? Try really hard to imagine another country doing that inside the US. I bet you can’t.
If I were one of the soldiers I would make myself a badge out of a can lid or maybe a spent round.
Syria has NOT invited us there. ISIS was probably getting in the way of our theft of Syrian oil.
The US warmongers are not even trying for a minute to produce consistent or sensible propaganda. They raided a Syrian city and killed an ISIS member, then air struck and killed two ISIS members? All that without killing civilians? Are our drones capable of differentiating ISIS members from the air? If those were ISIS, why not tell the Syrians to get them? ISIS is Syria’s sworn enemy and has been killing Syrian soldiers with weapons we supplied it (directly or indirectly) for years. No worries. The American and western populations are asleep. They wouldn’t even think of challenging the propaganda. They’re an authoritarian’s dream of a population to control.
U.S. must provoke a WW3 at all cost to survive. Just like Ukraine is US NATO pet project, Syria is Russia’s pet project.
????????????
Russia was asked for assistance by the legal government of Syria. I think you draw an illogical comparison. We started interfering with Ukraine eight years before they invited us in. In effect we molded Ukraine into client status long before we launched a proxy war there – at their “invitation”.
the article claims that uncle sam controls 1/3 of eastern syria where the oil is but i think that northern syria is where uncle sam is literally stealing the oil as soon as it is pumped right out of syrian soil
