With a lot of progress already made on negotiations, Iranian officials warn that they will not be “rushed” into deciding to finalize the nuclear deal just because everyone else keeps saying the time is running out.
There have been times where months went by without any progress, and the US in particular emphasizes that there’s not much time left. Iran has warned that the deadlines are artificial, and wants the deal successfully finished, not raced through.
The big thing for Iran is that they want guarantees that the sanctions relief promised by the nuclear deal will actually be delivered this time, and that the US won’t just bail on the process again the moment it seems convenient.
The US has resisted guarantees, saying they can’t promise what future US administrations will do. There is some wiggle room between a full guarantee and promising that the US will intend to honor the deal.
Iran has every reason to doubt US intentions after all that’s happened, and the US continues to scoff at requests for assurances, which only adds to those doubts.
One wonders what form any guarantees can take. Perhaps a very large sum in escrow, but who would hold the escrow?
Why bother? The USA is still agreement-incapable. Iran has plenty of friends.
Their economy is just really bad and they are desperate, unfortunately. Iran’s desperation and US intransigence and bad will are a bad combination.
Even if US signs this deal and make it a Treaty, there is no guarantee that future US admin would cancel the Treaty as they have done it before…!
The instrument has to be designed with incrementality. Washington, the party that reneged, needs to lift X+ sanctions first as a pledge of earnest, and Iran reciprocate with Y- degree of inspection, and upon each successful step move on to the next, Washington always required to give up + amounts and Iran always keeping the reversion option. As well the present UN IAEA chief clearly has to be removed and replaced by one acceptable to Iran.
Nice sequential strategies Robert… However I can guarantee you that US is not capable of going through with it… Perhaps Iran can, however knowing the the previous US behavior on the 2015 deal they won’t…! As for the future IAEA chief US and Israel will make sure him or her remains to be their puppet…!
Sadly, I completely agree. Regime change is their set-in-stone policy. From the start Washington has been in bad faith, using talks only to placate a fraction and give PR cover to the P5. Iran goes along to buy time, as well as showing to anybody who has eyes how false the Zionists are.
