At least six Iraqi police were killed and seven wounded Wednesday in an ISIS attack against a forward position near the village of al-Jillam, north of Baghdad.
ISIS is known to be active in the area, which is why the police are there. ISIS tends to favor hitting police sites as a way of looting weapons and equipment. After years of war almost all of the gear is shared across both sides.
Police were overrun in fighting in about an hour, and ISIS is still believed to be in the area. Such fights are not as common as they once were, but ISIS is trying to increase its activity.
ISIS held broad territory in Iraq and Syria a few years back, and since their defeat they are still trying to recover meaningful power.
